Ever camp at Catalina Island and go to the offshore / tuna grounds from there?
This trip is very special to me. 2025 marks the 8th year I’ve taken these families on this adventure. My first year in business and this family trusted me enough to guide them to experience ‘boat-in’ camping. The youngest that made it was 4 years old. This year we are up to 3 families and the youngest is 5 years old.
The dads and I finally figured out on the year of the dorado that if we came one day earlier we can set up camp and go fish for one day before the rest of the family shows up on the Catalina Express ferry.
Before the wives and kids got here this weekend we got to get on the tuna grounds and have a go at some big bluefin tuna. It was tough fishing. Bluefin being bluefin took a disappearing act. But we finally hooked and guess what? We lost. It’s okay. The dads got to experience the raw power of a legit bluefin. That’s the nature of fishing. This time the tuna won. We walked away with stories, memories and the fish gets to live to fight another day. Win /win in my book.
We’ve all been there. That’s why we love fishing and keep going back out. It’s not easy, but we get humbled and learn how to live better lives.
