In July, 10 members of our team celebrated work anniversaries at Odyssey.

Their service represents 110 combined years of work, as well as a robust sample of what we do for our customers: everything from ice road trucking in Alaska to improving data integrity and visibility across the supply chain.

Our thanks to all team members who celebrated their years of service last month. Here’s to many more to come.

Moving hazardous materials can go wrong quickly. To get it right, you need specialized equipment, dependable logistics vendors, full regulatory compliance, emergency response capabilities, and more.

If something goes wrong, it's costly at best and disastrous at worst.

In Inbound Logistics, Ian Reid, VP of Managed Services at Odyssey Logistics, shares what shippers should consider when moving hazmat freight.

Truckload costs are rising, and more shippers are moving eligible freight to rail.

That shift is putting added pressure on traditional 53-foot intermodal capacity, especially in high-demand markets. As equipment tightens, rail pricing and allocations can become more challenging.

But what if some of the capacity you need is already headed back to port?

Odyssey’s Domestic Repositioning Program matches eligible domestic freight with 20- and 40-foot ocean containers that would otherwise return empty.

The chemical sector has been weak this year, making every contract count even more for manufacturers. To thrive in a soft market, you need every bit of leverage you can get.

Will Schweda explains in a recent article for Chemical Industry Journal that chemical sampling is every manufacturer's first impression with their customers, but it’s often neglected as a strategy to increase and stabilize sales.

Read the full piece to learn more about the key pieces of a strong sampling program, and how it can strengthen your resilience during this year’s slump. >>> https://bit.ly/4i1mJKV

How are shippers adjusting as trucking capacity tightens?

We asked our network the same question in our newsletter. The results point to a market where most shippers are already making changes, but there is no clear consensus on where to start.

Thirty-five percent are locking in contract rates, 23% are diversifying their carrier or mode mix, and 17% are building in more lead time. Another 25% have not made a change yet.

For us, the takeaway is less about which tactic wins and more about how exposed each network is. A tighter market will hit different lanes and commitments differently, so the right response starts with knowing where your operation has the least flexibility.

The goal should be to understand where tighter capacity creates real risk and act there first.

Do you know there's a way to move bulk chemical without relying on a driver for the full cross-country haul?

ISO tank intermodal pairs rail for the long stretch with local drayage on either end, giving shippers a strong alternative to the road. It's part of how Odyssey approaches mode, matching the solution to the shipment rather than defaulting to one method.

Odyssey just opened a new warehouse in Cleveland, and there's space available.

Our new Heidtman facility is a good example of how we think about warehousing across our network, matching each space to the location, rail access, and handling equipment required for the freight being stored there. Being six miles from the Port of Cleveland means freight moves from ship to rail to warehouse without adding transit time.

When severe weather interrupts service to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or Alaska, the effects can linger well after conditions improve.

A missed sailing is harder to absorb when ocean service is limited and the next available option may be days away. Add disruptions on the ground, such as road closures or fuel shortages, and recovery gets more complicated.

For shippers moving freight to these markets, resilience starts well before a storm is in the forecast. Dan Datz, Vice President of Sales at Odyssey Logistics, recently shared his thoughts on how inventory placement and sailing strategy can help reduce exposure when conditions change.
