Endemic

Endemic refers to a plant or animal native to a single, specific location and found nowhere else in the world.

Altamaha Spiny Mussels are endemic to the river.

They speak to river health and water quality. That picture has two happy biologists in it.

The Altamaha spinymussel hadn't been documented in 15 years, until one turned up in a survey in Georgia earlier this summer.

Traditionally, loggerhead sea turtle shells were displayed in homes along the southeastern coast. Unlike shells from the more commercially valuable hawksbill turtle—the source of genuine “tortoiseshell”—loggerhead shells were generally kept as trophies, much like mounted fish.

The shells were often byproducts of a time when sea turtles were harvested for food. They became a form of natural decoration during an era when attitudes toward wildlife and conservation were very different from those of today.

Loggerhead sea turtles are now protected under the Endangered Species Act, making it illegal to take or newly acquire their shells except under limited authorized circumstances.

For some, this hand-hammered copper replica will evoke memories of Grandpa’s fish camp and a bygone era of life along the southeastern coast.

Big cordgrass (Spartina cynosuroides) is a tall, coarse marsh grass common along the upper edges of tidal marshes in the Altamaha River Delta, often growing at the transition zone between brackish and freshwater tidal systems. It can reach heights of 6 to 10 feet, distinguishing it from the shorter smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) that dominates the more saline, lower marsh closer to open water. In the Altamaha Delta, big cordgrass thrives in the slightly less saline conditions found upriver, where freshwater input from the Altamaha mixes with tidal influence. Its dense, rhizomatous growth helps stabilize sediment along channel banks and marsh edges, providing erosion control as well as habitat and nesting cover for marsh birds, small mammals, and various invertebrates.
