1. Tires. Check pressure and tread depth. Both.
2. Fluids. Oil, coolant, brake fluid, windshield washer. All four.
3. Lights. Headlights, brake lights, turn signals. Walk around the car before you leave.
4. Wipers. If they skip or streak, replace them before the trip, not during rain on I-75.
5. Battery. If it is more than three years old, have it tested. Auto parts stores do this at no charge.

How to read a heavy-duty recovery scene before a single piece of rigging is attached.

A recovery scene is a data set. The operators who work safely read it before they touch it.

1. Traffic Exposure
Where is the vehicle relative to travel lanes? What is the sight distance for approaching traffic? Is law enforcement managing the scene, or does that need to be the first action?

2. Vehicle Orientation
Is the truck on its side, partially rolled, or off the road on an embankment? Orientation determines rotator positioning and usable rigging points before anything moves.

3. Load Status
Is the trailer loaded? Has cargo shifted? Is the trailer still attached to the tractor or separated? A loaded overturned trailer requires stabilization before recovery. No exceptions.

4. Structural Integrity
Has the frame been bent? Is the kingpin still engaged? Rigging to a compromised structural point under full load is how recoveries produce a second emergency on the same scene.

5. Hazmat Indicators
Placards, spills, odor. If a hazmat element is present, the recovery protocol changes entirely before any boom moves.

Summer heat does not just make driving uncomfortable. It is when tires fail.

Ohio summers push asphalt surface temperatures well above the air temperature. Underinflated tires flex more than designed in the heat, generate additional internal heat, and can fail at highway speed.

I-75 and I-70 see a consistent spike in tire-related stops every summer. If you are running on tires that are low on pressure, cracked at the sidewall, or near the wear bars, the heat will find that weakness before you notice it.

Check tire pressure when the tires are cold. Your vehicle's recommended PSI is on the sticker inside the driver-side door jamb, not on the tire sidewall.

Scene safety is not a checklist item you get to after the rigging. It is the first step. Every time.

Before any Sandy's operator attaches a chain or positions a boom, there is a scene assessment.

Identifying traffic exposure and confirming appropriate law enforcement or traffic control is in place.

Reading the load. An overturned trailer carrying an unknown commodity requires a different approach than a bobtail on a clear shoulder.

Checking for fuel, fluid, or hazmat indicators. A recovery that disturbs an uncontrolled fuel leak turns a towing call into a hazmat call.

Assessing structural integrity of the vehicle. A trailer compromised in a rollover may not hold rigging at standard attachment points.

Only after that assessment does equipment positioning begin.

MYTH: Push your car off the highway if it is blocking a lane.
FACT: Do not push it. Do not steer it while others push from behind. Do not put anyone behind or beside the vehicle while traffic is moving.

MYTH: Staying in your car on the shoulder is always safer than getting out.
FACT: It depends on the situation. If your vehicle is in a travel lane or partially blocking one, exit on the passenger side and move behind the guardrail. A vehicle striking yours at highway speed while you are inside is the primary danger.

MYTH: Hazard lights make you visible enough.
FACT: Hazard lights help, but they do not replace distance from the road. Get away from the vehicle and call for help from behind the barrier.

What to have ready when you call in a disabled tractor-trailer. Four things your dispatcher needs in the first 60 seconds.

Every minute spent gathering basic information after a breakdown is a minute added to your downtime.

1. Exact Location
GPS coordinates, mile marker, nearest exit, direction of travel, and which lane or shoulder the unit is on. 'Somewhere on I-75 near Dayton' adds 10 to 15 minutes to response time. Be specific.

2. Unit Type and Load Status
Bobtail or loaded tandem? Flatbed, van, or re**er? The recovery equipment required changes completely based on what you have. Know your GVWR and current load condition.

3. Nature of the Failure
Blown tire, rolled axle, engine failure, or collision damage all require different equipment. If the trailer carries a hazmat placard, communicate that on the first call.

4. Scene Safety Status
Is the driver injured? Is the vehicle blocking a travel lane? Are there fuel or fluid leaks? This determines whether law enforcement needs to be on scene before the tow unit arrives.
