Good Saturday Morning.
We have been pretty fortunate with the weather this fall but it still leads us to our yearly reminder that we are entering into our bad weather season. With the changing of the lakes from warm to cold, increasingly higher winds, and winter storms, it increases the chance of delays and service interruptions due to high waves and surges that we experience this time of year. Just because the winds may not be as severe at your house or even look bad on webcams or local weather reports, that may not always reflect what is happening in our one mile ferry crossing.
Also, the shorter days play a factor as we can’t see the size of waves and dock conditions due to low light conditions. As we all know, weather patterns are ever changing and it’s especially difficult to know exactly what we are up against until we are in it. We do monitor weather conditions very closely and get watches and warnings as to what’s coming for our area a day or two in advance that we can give to you, the public so you’re aware and plan accordingly.
For the record, we do not like to delay, shut down or cause any kind of disruption to Island life any more than you do but it is our licenses, vessel and livelihoods on the line! Also, its the sole jurisdiction of the captain-on-duty as to run or not run during any and all types of weather. The SAFTEY of you, the traveling public, the crew and our boat is always at forefront.
So please check our page for any weather-related watches and warnings that we will experience this fall and winter season.
