Yellow's bankruptcy and closure has been effecting the trucking industry over the last few months with another round of auctioning off assets taking place, creating a bidding war. Saia spent $7.9 million for 11 leases, adding to the $236 million it previously spent to purchase 17 of Yellow's terminals. Estes Express Lines spent $35.3 million on five leased properties. A unit of R&L Carriers spent $9 million on three leased properties. Part of ArcBest Corp. handed over $7.7 million for a terminal in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings paid $417,150 for two terminals. More ripples are being felt as the landscape continues to change within the trucking delivery industry.

Yellow's rolling stock -- some 12,000 trucks and 40,000 trailers -- is to be sold by Ritchie Brothers and Nation's Capital.

Definitely a lot of highs and lows over the last year for the trucking industry, with new regulations, proposed regulations on hold and big spending for safety gains.
"Over the last 12 months, Department of Transportation officials have been claiming safety gains thanks to the National Roadway Safety Strategy, billions of federal dollars for infrastructure improvements, and regulatory proposals aimed at mandating assisted driver systems for heavy trucks. At a House Transportation Committee hearing on Dec. 13, Ann Carlson, acting administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said the trend in fatal accidents has slightly decreased in 2023."

Over the last 12 months, Department of Transportation officials have been claiming safety gains, billions of federal dollars for infrastructure improvements, and more.

We're not getting political here, or endorsing any candidates, but this quote from Vivek Ramaswamy, when announcing his appearance at the Truckers Jamboree later this month in Iowa, really hits home the importance of truckers. “Truckers are a crucial link in the American supply chain that power America’s economy. They’re not just haulers of goods -- they're the guardians of freedom on our highways." This is something that everyone in the industry can get behind, the guardians of freedom!

From younger drivers to speed limters in trucks, the FMCSA representative was grilled on new possible programs and mandates by the House Subcommittee. "The House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee held a subcommittee hearing to get an update on the implementation of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act from witnesses representing the different transportation modes regulated by the Department of Transportation.
Several questions were directed at FMCSA Administrator Robin Hutcheson regarding the agency mandating heavy-truck speed limiters, but they seemed to be more about the representatives giving their opinion than actually looking for real answers."

If anyone was hoping to get any hints about what might be in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s upcoming proposed rule on truck speed limiters from FMCSA Administrator Robin Hutcheson during a Dec. 13 House subcommittee hearing, they were probably disappointed.

AAA releases a new study calling out drivers and everyone we share the road with. Stating that over half the drivers we share the road with are dangerous, distracted, aggressive and speed demons. This is a scary thought when truckers are having to maneuver a large semi across the country, avoiding dangerous drivers, risking their lives to make their runs. A nice reminder to put the phone down, stay alert, be kind and slow down.

“Despite acknowledging the dangers, some drivers continue to engage in potentially deadly behaviors, particularly speeding."

Colorado Department of Transportation has taken new steps in educating drivers on the challenges truck drivers face while driving in the mountains, including tips on winter driving; hot brakes, runaway ramps and summer driving; and construction zone safety. "The Mountain Rules awareness and safety education program, launched in 2019, is a joint effort of the Colorado DOT, the Colorado State Patrol, and the Colorado Motor Carriers Association. The short videos are narrated by Nate McCarty, a Colorado native and veteran truck driver. There is also a video that discusses challenges specific to the state’s Interstate-70 corridor."

The Mountain Rules safety awareness program in Colorado now has three videos to educate truck drivers on handling winter weather, runaway trucks, and navigating construction zones.

The American Trucking Associations and other trucking groups are calling on Congress to streamline and change the approach for essential trucker drivers to gain background checks while working with the TSA. "It would allow workers to apply existing valid background checks to multiple TSA-managed credentialing programs, such as the Transportation Worker Identification Credentials and Hazardous Materials Endorsements." This would save truckers and their companies time and money and create less overhead from an enforcement standpoint.

Bipartisan legislation would eliminate waste and inefficiencies in credentialing system costing frontline transportation workers

Surprisingly a large number of freight companies are not rated for safety. "Major trucking companies and brokers who book their freight are pressuring the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to attach a safety rating to carriers operating without such a rating — a situation that exists for over 90% of the freight market. The concern comes as FMCSA looks at developing a new way to verify when a motor carrier is fit to operate trucks in interstate commerce, known as a safety fitness determination. "

A government system that leaves most of the trucking industry without a safety rating needs an overhaul, carriers and brokers tell regulators.
