New Terminal Tuesday: Less weaving. More moving. ✈️

If you watched our recent new terminal video, you probably noticed just how BIG the new TSA queue area is. But don't worry, we're not planning to send you through miles of winding ropes!

The new DSM will feature the Lavi Intelligent Queuing System, designed to help passengers move through the security line more efficiently.

Here's how it works: Instead of airport staff manually adjusting the queue as passenger volumes change, this smart system uses real-time information to automatically open and close gates, adjusting the path passengers take through the line.

More passengers? The system can adjust. Fewer passengers? It can shorten the route so you're not weaving through empty lanes. It's all about creating a smoother, more efficient experience as you make your way to TSA screening.

Just another example of how we're building a smarter DSM, with the passenger experience in mind.

All good things come to an end, and this one is a little bittersweet. ❤️

As we prepare for the opening of our new terminal, we're beginning to say goodbye to a few familiar places at DSM.

Berk & Chesters, our landside restaurant near the meet-and-greet area, will serve its last customers on Friday, October 16. The closure will allow the team to begin preparing for the move to our new terminal.

Don't worry, travelers! All restaurants located beyond TSA will remain open and operating as usual.

There are exciting things ahead for DSM, but that doesn't mean we won't miss a few things about the place we've called home for so many years.

⛈️ It’s sunny at DSM. So why is my flight delayed due to the weather?

Good question. The weather affecting your flight isn’t always the weather you can see outside the terminal.

A storm hundreds of miles away can affect the aircraft coming to pick you up, the crew scheduled to operate your flight or the airspace your flight needs to travel through.

Airlines manage their aircraft and flight schedules. Air Traffic Control manages the safe flow of aircraft through the skies. And here at DSM, our Operations team monitors local conditions and keeps the airfield ready for arriving and departing aircraft.

There are a lot of moving pieces behind every flight, and sometimes a sunny day in Des Moines can still be a stormy day for air travel. ✈️

New Terminal Tuesday is going to the dogs. 🐾

Traveling with a four-legged companion? The new DSM has something for them, too.
A new indoor pet relief area will be located post-security near Gate 11, giving travelers a convenient option without having to leave the secure side of the terminal.

Inside, you'll find:
- Artificial turf for a little business 🐕
- Waste bags and disposal
- A rinse area
- A sink for travelers to wash up afterward

Prefer some fresh air? DSM will continue to have an outdoor pet relief area as well.

It’s one more small detail designed to make traveling through DSM easier for everyone in your travel party, including the ones with four legs.

Southwest Airlines is adding NEW nonstop service from Des Moines to Orlando beginning in June! ✈️

Orlando has long been one of the top destinations for Central Iowa travelers, with an average of 106 passengers traveling each way, every day in 2025.

The new Saturday service gives DSM travelers another nonstop option to get to the sunshine, theme parks and everything Orlando has to offer.

And that makes TWO new Southwest destinations coming to DSM in 2027:
🎸 Nashville – beginning in March
🌴 Orlando – beginning in June

More places to go. More options from DSM. We like the sound of that. ✈️

New Terminal Tuesday: Let’s talk curbside. 🚐

This week, we’re taking you to the commercial curb, where canopies are going up to help protect travelers from Iowa’s sun, rain, snow, and everything in between.

This is where you’ll catch transportation like rental car and economy parking shuttles, charter buses, private transportation and off-airport parking shuttles.
And we’re adding a few comforts while you wait. The finished space will include heated waiting shelters, benches and landscaping, along with covered areas stretching along the curb.

What you see today is only part of the finished commercial curb. Construction will continue, but the portion needed to serve passengers will be ready when the new terminal opens in January.
