From Samarkand we were able to spend a day in another country- Tajikistan. I was astounded by the kindness of its people and the raw nature.

Here is how the day went:
we were picked up from our hotel in Samarkand by a taxi and taken to the Uzbekistan-Tajikistan border where we then crossed by foot.

Once we reached the Tajikistan border, Diloshube (our amazing local guide) was waiting for us with a big smile.

From here we loaded into a van and were off Panjakent.
In Panjakent we took a quick peak into the market and got our food that we saved for a picnic in the most scenic spot!

From there we continued towards the mountains - about an hour in we hit rough unpaved roads and or ascent into the mountains and its villages.

We stopped at 4 alpine lakes before taking a break for lunch. After lunch we continued to the final 3 lakes that kept getting more and more beautiful!

Along the way we stopped to give snacks to every local kid we came across.

Diloshube gave us as much insight into the country of Tajikistan as she could in our short time together.

After a rough ride back down the mountain we were dropped back at the boarder where we again crossed on foot and found our taxi driver from the morning waiting to return us to Samarkand.

Through these 400 year old doors you will find Ali the hardest working hotel clerk in the game. His dedication and attention to detail really made our time in Bukhara so comfortable and special. Not only is the stunning inside and out but their staff is exceptional.

Bukhara is known for its ancient trading domes which acted as a major marketplace for caravans arriving and departing along the silk road.

It’s small, but it has everything you could need, palaces, grand squares, towering minarets, amazing hand-crafted uzbek goods, ancient bath houses and incredibly ornamented facade. I

Welcome to the Orient Star, Khiva. A stay that transports you back in time.

Directly within the main gate of the historic walled city, this 17th century UNESCO protected Mohammed Amin Khan Madrassah allows you to immerse yourself in the History of Khiva, and surround yourself with the stunning tile work and ancient architecture. While still enjoying modern amenities.

I absolutely loved my stay here! A perfect location and a truly special stay.

Khiva and its UNESCO protected & restored wall city used to be a major trading center along the ancient silk road. & it’s schools of math and sciences produced some of the greatest minds in history.

Its towering minarets, vibrant tile work, and talented artisans are still so rooted in their culture, it makes it a joy to slow down and wander through the ancient streets and markets

For a special treat- stay in one of the ancient Madrasas :)

TASHKENT- UZBEKISTAN 🇺🇿
One thing about me is that I will always opt for the longest and hardest travel days at the beginning of my trip, so its smooth sailing for the rest of it!

After 2 days of air travel (with the Istanbul bonus) we arrived in Tashkent at 8am- we are lucky enough that our accommodation allowed us to check in that early & after a shower and a short nap we hit the city.

Wanting something more relaxed, we took their beautiful metro system to Tashkent City Park, where we had lunch at .tashkent for some elevated Uzbek cuisine. The highlight was definitely this Bone marrow Samsa- we are still talking about it!

After we checked out Amir Temur Square and the famous Hotel Uzbekistan.

After that is was time to reorganize and head to the train station for our 13.5 hour train to Khiva. - the good thing about being so tired- we slept that whole ride!

A Quick & Free Stopover in Istanbul

If you are flying with turkish airlines- their free stopover programs range from 4.5 hour tours - 24 hours with complimentary hotel stays.

Our tour was the 4.5 evening Bosphorus tour and was a perfect way to break up a 10 hour layover.

By the time we exited the airport, wen’t through passport control & checked in for our tour, we only had to wait about an hour before it started.

The tour included: Roundtrip transfers from IST airport to the city (about 40 minutes each way)
- a Bosphorus cruise which allowed us to see the main sights like Galata Tower, Hagia sophia, the Blue Mosque, and several of the main palaces from the water.
- Dinner: they provided a complimentary dinner at a local restaurant.
- Free time: we had about 30-40 minutes of free time after dinner to walk around Istanbul before heading back to the airport.
By the time we made it back to the airport we have about 2 hours to check-in, clear security and passport control and find our gate.

The timing was great and it provides such a wonderful taste of the city for an unbeatable value!
