✈️ 🛃 Partnering for Safety & Preparedness at Watertown International Airport!

We were proud to collaborate with our federal partners at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Office of Field Operations - Alexandria Bay) for a recent tabletop exercise focused on flight diversion readiness.

As an international airport, we clear all types of general aviation flights directly into the U.S. — from two-seater prop aircraft and large corporate jets to military planes! Exercises like this ensure seamless coordination for larger air carrier aircraft diversions, help us address operational challenges, and keep our community safe.

Thank you to the CBP team for your partnership and dedication to protecting our borders! 🇺🇸

It is with heavy hearts that we honor the memory and legacy of Darrel Thomas, who passed away earlier this week.

A proud native of Dexter, NY, Darrel was a deeply dedicated Airport Maintenance Mechanic at Watertown International Airport, giving over 22 years of selfless public service prior to his retirement on November 21, 2021. Throughout his career, including pivotal moments like the airport’s transition from City of Watertown to Jefferson County sponsorship, Darrell was a constant, reliable anchor for the entire Airport team.

Even after retiring from full-time work, Darrel’s commitment to his trade and community never wavered. During those notoriously harsh North Country winters, he remained a steadfast temporary seasonal worker, braving the elements to keep the airport open and safe. Many will fondly remember him as one of the regular operators behind the wheel of the iconic 1964 Oshkosh Snowblower, expertly clearing the airfield.

Darrel truly embodied what it means to be a public servant. Whether he was helping a stranded traveler locate and dig out their car from under five feet of snow or working tirelessly out on the runway to guarantee a safe arrival for incoming aircraft, he always put others first.

As we reflect on Darrel’s passing, we are also reminded of other notable airport workers and deeply missed public servants in our community who have passed away over the last few years—including his fellow dedicated Watertown International Airport colleague, Philip Fay, as well as Steven Gerstenschlager. Their collective legacy of hard work and commitment to our North Country region will not be forgotten.

Darrel will forever be remembered as a coworker who gave his absolute all for the success of his work, his community, and above all, his family.

Rest in peace, Darrel. Your hard work, dedication, and warm spirit left an indelible mark on Watertown International Airport, and you will be deeply missed. Our thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. ✈️❄️❤️

25 years later, we still remember.

We honor the lives lost on September 11, the heroes who stepped forward, and the enduring strength of New York and our great nation.

09/11/2026

Today, on the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2026, we pause to honor and remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost on one of our nation’s darkest days. We keep their memory in our hearts, and we hold their families and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.

We also stand in profound gratitude for the first responders, service members, and ordinary citizens who showed extraordinary heroism in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

In the aftermath of the attacks, the resilience of our country was put to the test. Among those who stepped up to rebuild and protect our way of life were the dedicated workers of the aviation industry. In the days and weeks that followed, pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers, ground crews, and security personnel returned to the skies with unwavering resolve. Their courage and determination ensured that our aviation system became safer, stronger, and more secure than ever before.

They refused to allow fear to ground us, ensuring that our freedom to connect, travel, and live openly remained intact.

Quarter of a century later, our resolve remains unbroken. We will never forget the lives lost, the sacrifices made, and the enduring strength of the American spirit.
