G&G Off The Grid

G&G Off The Grid Grammy & Gramps are on a cross country excursion, learning to camp without hookups!

Friday, November 7th, last Harvest Host stop for this trip is in Fulton, KY @ the Fulton Winery. Unfortunately the winery was not open as they were setting up downtown for a big shopping event. We were, however, able to go downtown, walk around to the shops and catch their table for samples & a purchase of a few bottles. The weather going forward is predicted to be in the 20’s at night, so we need to bleed the water lines & winterize the camper before we leave Fulton. Mission accomplished on Saturday morning before we pulled out for our last stop @ my sister, Julie’s in Lovington, IL. As always we had a nice 2 day stay, playing games & eating way too much! The weather turned ugly, high winds on Sunday with some snow flurries. We had planned to go out antiquing but changed our minds & hunkered down. Monday we woke to high winds again and snow that was now sticking, at least to the grassy areas. We got on the road to Iowa City about 8:30 am. Roads were fine, but winds were strong for at least half of our drive.
WE ARE HOME, after 2 months on the road, and even Jim is happy to be here. Lots of unpacking to do but it was great to be back. I think the camper will have a well deserved rest, at least until next spring. Until then, it’s G&G Off the Grid, signing off!

Making our trek back to Iowa City, last night our stop was in Nashville, TN @ a campground where we were ON the grid. We looked, in vain to find a Harvest Host spot, but there were none in the area we wanted to be near. After having showers we drove in to the city to attend a performance of Thankskilling, the musical @ the Street Theater Company where our nephew, Randy Craft, is the Executive Artistic Director. Before the show, however, Jim & I walked a few blocks to a shopping/restaurant area to have dinner. We ate @ a place called PennePazze. Our meal was delicious! Then back to attend the performance. It was very different but very entertaining. Funny, a bit on the raunchy side, but with a comical delivery. The talent was phenomenal! Afterwards Randy gave us a behind the scenes tour, which was great. Then we went over to Randy & Alex's (Randy's husband) home and Randy schooled Jim on fine Bourbon, which he has a huge collection of. Guess who was the designated driver this time? Rarity, right? It was a great evening.

Ok, so last night we stayed at the H***hie H***h Distillery in Alabama. We sampled multiple Moonshines, all delicious! This is a young couple who are forging a path to entrepreneurship & we applaud them. We bought several of their products & can't wait to share them over the holidays! Tonight we are in Cullman, AL. We drove into the old downtown area today and it was wonderful! Lots of shops in old restored buildings. A vibrant community working together to restore the history of their town. Tomorrow, off to Nashville. Until then, this is G&G off the grid, goodnight!

We left Moss Park in Orlando this morning, heading to our Harvest Host stop @ the Railroad Inn in Welborn, FL. Just south of Gainesville, FL our trip hit the skids. As usual, I think we should be stopping for gas. As usual, Jim Housel says, we're fine only about 5 miles to go. Guess who was right. We sat on the shoulder of I-75, 5 miles south of the Gainesville exit for 5 hours waiting to finally get towed. They first sent out a guy with about a 1 gallon gas can. He put it in the truck, problem is, when you run out of gas in a diesel truck the line has to get primed/bled to get it started again. Of course the guy who brought the gas was clueless & just left. After communicating with both AAA & Good Sam (roadside assistance for RV's) Good Sam's sent out 2 tow trucks, one for the truck & 1 for the camper. They towed the truck into a Midas in Gainesville & dropped the camper & Jim across the street @ a Target parking lot. From there I can't tell you how super accommodating the manager @ the Midas was! He came right out to me to say that they should tow the camper over to their lot so it doesn't get hauled away. Of course when I called Jim to tell him that he said the tow truck had already unhooked & he wouldn't do it. Chris, from Midas said, "well I have my truck & I'll just go over there & get it for you". And that he did. He stayed overtime and got the truck started but told us to just spend the night in their lot, which we are. And on top of that, he didn't charge us a penny. Jim asked him what he could do to compensate him & he just said, "give me a 5 star review on Google". DONE! And to that I still have faith in the kindness of others. 2 short videos to follow. Goodnight from the Midas parking lot in Gainesville, FL!

Today is November 3rd. We have been ON the grid for 11 days in Orlando, FL, staying @ Moss Park State campground. Our nephew, Damon Zwiener got married on Halloween so we came early to help with the reception preparations @ my brother Paul Zwiener' house. Moss Park was really nice. Spacious spots with electric & water, shower facilities & great places to hike. Wildlife was all around & we were only a 20 minute drive to my brother's. The reception was perfect with a total Halloween flavor. Guests wore costumes (all but Jim & I who are losers). Included are photos from our campsite & the reception.

We have now moved on to Kingsland, Georgia & are Harvest Hosting @ a Golf Course/ Country club. Pulled in shortly after noon & got set up. Went in to the club house restaurant & had a delicious lunch. I ordered a Buffalo Blue salad & Jim got the fried Grouper basket with onion rings. Both were excellent! We sat out on the patio, as the day is perfect. Jim is now making bread, cause we can't be without his bread for toast. Will probably run into town in a bit, but at the moment a nap may be in our future.

Tonight we are in Manning, SC at a golf course. Before we got here, we stopped in town & joined the Anytime Fitness Club with our Silver Sneakers benefit (which means for free). I did the treadmill for 2 miles & Jim did weights. After our workout, we walked the downtown area. As with every other small town downtown we have passed through, it is a ghost town. Really sad when you see these beautiful old buildings basically shuttered up. If there is anything still alive in these buildings it will be either a lawyer’s office or an insurance agency.
In order to patronize the golf course, we went in to the bar & had a drink. We would have ordered food, but they don’t have any. So, tonight it will be Sloppy Joe Spaghetti Squash bowls, compliments of Weight Watchers. One of our favorite meals. They have a Seniors tournament here tomorrow, beginning @ 10 am, so we will be pulling out of here prior to that.
Pictures to follow.
