We talk to drivers everyday who are leaving out some of the most important factors that go into calculating their true cost per mile.

If you don’t know your true costs, how do you know whether a load pays enough?

A rate might cover fuel and your truck payment but leave nothing for your paycheck, maintenance, tires or taxes. Add the empty miles and time waiting, and that “profitable” load can turn into a loss.

Knowing your true cost gives you a minimum rate to work from, and a reason to negotiate or walk away.

MILES DON’T PAY YOU. REVENUE DOES. TRUCKING MATH. (Random thoughts)

I was looking at some freight the other day and it got me thinking about how much truckers focus on miles without really looking at what those miles are producing.

For example, I saw a load paying $2,500 on 740 miles.

On the surface, $2,500 sounds pretty damn good.

That’s about $3.38 a mile.

But let’s untangle it.

If you’re getting 6 MPG and diesel is $5.80:

740 miles ÷ 6 MPG = about 123 gallons

123 gallons × $5.80 = roughly $715 in fuel

So that $2,500 load leaves roughly $1,785 after fuel, before insurance, truck payment, maintenance, trailer, plates, etc.

Now compare that with a completely different scenario.

You find a $1,500 load going 300 miles.

That’s $5.00 a mile.

At the same 6 MPG and $5.80 diesel:

300 miles = 50 gallons

50 × $5.80 = $290 in fuel

So you’ve got roughly $1,210 left after fuel.

Now here’s where it gets interesting.

The $2,500 load generated $1,000 more revenue, but it also required 440 more miles and approximately $425 more fuel.

And that’s before we even talk about what happens after you deliver.

Where does that load leave you?

Do you have another load waiting?

Do you have to deadhead 200 miles?

Are you sitting for a day?

Can you grab another $1,500 load nearby?

Because THAT changes the economics.

You could have:

Scenario 1

$2,500 revenue
740 miles
$715 fuel

Or:

Scenario 2

$1,500 revenue
300 miles
$290 fuel

Or maybe:

Scenario 3

$1,500 revenue
300 loaded miles
100 miles deadhead
400 total miles

Now your economics look different again.

And here’s another thing people miss:

You might already have 100 gallons of fuel in the tanks.

That doesn’t mean the fuel was free.

But it does mean you don’t necessarily have to stop and spend another $500–$700 at the pump every time you move a load.

This is why I don’t believe in looking at trucking through one number.

Not just rate per mile.

Not just gross revenue.

Not just miles.

Not just MPG.

You have to put the whole damn thing together.

Revenue.

Loaded miles.

Deadhead.

Fuel cost.

Fuel economy.

Fixed operating costs.

Where the load delivers.

What’s available next.

That’s how you actually determine what a load is doing for your business.

A $2,500 load isn’t automatically better because it pays $2,500.

A $5/mile load isn’t automatically better because it pays $5/mile.

And 3,000 miles isn’t automatically better than 2,000 miles.

The question I’m asking is:

What did those miles actually produce after the cost of producing them?

That’s the part of trucking I think a lot of people overlook.

Stop guessing at the economics. Untangle them.

It doesn’t need to be complicated.
Input your business costs.
Put in the load. Run It shows you what you’re actually looking at after your costs. Negotiator shows you the rate you need to make the load worth it.

Two trucks can run almost the same miles and still have completely different results.

Fuel usage, idle time, deadhead, routing, maintenance habits…it all adds up.
That’s why looking at your fleet as one big number isn’t always enough. Knowing what’s happening truck by truck helps you see where the money is really going.

Lol Brokers getting hit with a RICO gonna have them walking on eggshells!.... And the fact that it's these carriers makes this more interesting....

"A new legal fight is putting two of the U.S. freight brokerage industry’s largest players, C.H. Robinson and Total Quality Logistics (TQL), at the center of a federal lawsuit alleging violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, better known as RICO.

The case was filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas by six trucking companies: Stevens Trucking, Western Flyer Express, D&M Carriers, doing business as Freymiller Trucking, IWX Motor Freight, Christenson Transportation Inc. and E.O.S. Inc.

The plaintiffs allege that C.H. Robinson, which trades on Nasdaq under the symbol CHRW, and TQL participated in a pattern of racketeering activity involving forced labor and wire fraud and knowingly, or with reckless disregard, derived substantial financial benefits from it."

A fleet can bring in a lot of money and still struggle to keep it.
Revenue only tells part of the story. The real question is: after every truck and every expense, what are you actually keeping?
That’s the picture Fleet Shield helps you see.
