Things you should NEVER put in your checked bag!! 🚫

Some things should NEVER go in your checked luggage because they’re either prohibited, too important to risk losing, or something you may need immediately if your bag is delayed.

Keep essentials like medications, passports, important travel documents, cash, valuables, power banks, spare lithium batteries, electronics, and anything you’ll need during your first 24 hours in your carry-on or personal item.

And remember: spare lithium batteries and power banks belong in your carry-on, not your checked bag.

SAVE this before your next flight!

The African Safari you THINK you want vs. What you ACTUALLY want

Your first safari doesn’t need the most parks, the fanciest lodge, or nonstop game drives.

A better safari is about where you go, when you go, how much time you have there, the quality of your guides, wildlife density, and the experiences that matter most to YOU.

The goal isn’t to cram the most into your itinerary. It’s to build the right safari.

SAVE this if an African safari is on your list.

Taxis in Italy 101 🇮🇹🚕

Taking a taxi in Italy works differently than it does in the U.S., so knowing the basics before your trip can make transportation much easier.

Official taxis in Italy are typically white, marked TAXI, licensed, and metered. In most cities, you’ll use a taxi stand, hotel or restaurant call service, taxi app, or local radio-taxi service.

Uber is available in some areas, but it does not work the same way it does in the U.S. Depending on the city, you may see Uber Taxi, Uber Black, or NCC private-driver services. Apps such as itTaxi, appTaxi, inTaxi, FREENOW, WeTaxi, and Taxi Move can also be useful.

For early flights, rural areas, villas, large groups, lots of luggage, or tight train and ferry connections, prebooking a private transfer may be the better option.

Things that might surprise you on your first trip to Italy! 🇮🇹

Going to Italy for the first time? 🇮🇹 here’s some things to know!

Breakfast is usually lighter, dinner starts later, restaurant water is typically not free, elevators can be tiny, hotel rooms are often smaller, and air conditioning may not feel as strong as it does at home.

You may also need to ask for the check at restaurants, pay to use some public bathrooms, carry coins or small euro notes, and expect some restaurants and shops to close between lunch and dinner.

Save this for your Italy vacation planning, especially if you’re researching Italy travel tips, first trip to Italy advice, Italian restaurants, hotels in Italy, public bathrooms in Italy, dining customs in Italy, and what Americans should know before visiting Italy.

Madagascar for Beginners 🇲🇬

Planning a trip to Madagascar for the first time? 🇲🇬 One of the most important things to know is that Madagascar is too large and spread out to realistically see everything in one trip. Your itinerary should be built around the regions, wildlife and experiences that matter most to you.

For most first-time travelers, around 2 weeks is a good starting point. May through October is generally a popular time for wildlife viewing, hiking and national parks, although the best month depends on your route.

Madagascar is also very different from a traditional African safari. Instead of lions, elephants, giraffes and rhinos, you’ll find lemurs, chameleons, fossas, reptiles, endemic birds and other wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.

Different regions offer completely different experiences, from eastern rainforests and southern hiking routes to western baobabs and Tsingy formations, plus beaches and islands in the north.

Travel between regions can mean long drives, rough roads, domestic flights and private drivers, so planning the right route is one of the most important parts of a Madagascar vacation.

Save this Madagascar travel guide if you’re researching when to visit Madagascar, how long to stay, where to go and what to expect from a Madagascar wildlife trip.

Where to Stay in Italy Based on What You DON’T Want 🙅🏻‍♀️

Sometimes the easiest way to plan an Italy itinerary is to start with what you don’t want. Hate crowds? Look at Umbria. Don’t want extreme summer heat? Consider the Dolomites. Want a quieter lake experience than Lake Como? Try Lake Orta. Don’t want to change hotels every few nights? Use Florence as a base for day trips. If nightlife is not important, Val d’Orcia gives you small towns, wine country and slower-paced days. Want southern Italy without the intensity of Naples or the Amalfi Coast? Puglia may be a better fit. Don’t want to rent a car? Rome is one of the easiest major cities to explore without one. And if you want coastal scenery with fewer international tourists, Calabria deserves a look. The “best” place to stay in Italy depends on how you actually want your trip to feel.

I’m Sarah DiPiazza, a Wisconsin-based Travel Advisor & Concierge specializing in Italy, African safaris and cruises. I build customized Italy itineraries around your priorities, travel style and logistics instead of forcing every traveler into the same Rome-Florence-Venice itinerary. I handle hotels, transportation, tours, reservations and the details in between so you can actually enjoy the trip. If you’re ready to start planning your Italy vacation, you can book a free consultation with me through the link in my bio.

Animals You Might See on Safari in Africa Besides the Big 5

The Big 5 get most of the attention, but they are only a small part of what you might see on safari in Africa. Depending on where you go, you could also spot giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, cheetahs, hyenas, African wild dogs, baboons, monkeys, antelope and a huge variety of birds. Some of these animals are common sightings, while others, like African wild dogs, can be much harder to find. Safari is about the entire ecosystem, not just checking five animals off a list.

I’m Sarah DiPiazza, a Wisconsin-based Travel Advisor & Concierge specializing in African safaris, Italy and cruises. I plan customized safari trips around the experience you actually want, including the right countries, parks, lodges, wildlife areas, transfers and activities. Which Pasta Shape to Order by Region in Italy 🇮🇹🍝

Pasta in Italy is deeply regional, and the shape on your plate can tell you a lot about where you are. Tuscany has thick, hand-rolled pici, Puglia is famous for orecchiette, Lazio has hollow bucatini, Sardinia has tiny ridged malloreddus, Piedmont has stuffed agnolotti del plin, Lombardy has buckwheat pizzoccheri, Liguria has twisted trofie, and Emilia-Romagna is known for silky tagliatelle. From Alpine dumplings and stuffed pastas in northern Italy to rustic hand-shaped noodles in the south, every region has its own pasta traditions. Save this guide for your next Italy trip so you know which local pasta shape to look for wherever you go.

I’m Sarah DiPiazza, a Wisconsin-based Travel Advisor & Concierge specializing in Italy, African safaris and cruises. I plan customized Italy vacations with the details handled for you, including hotels, transportation, tours, restaurant recommendations and the regional experiences that make a trip feel like more than a checklist of famous sights.
