⚓ Boating Safety Reminder: Check Your Electronics Before You Leave the Dock! ⚓

Before heading out on the water, take a few minutes to make sure your essential safety equipment is working properly.

✅ Test your VHF marine radio and confirm you can transmit and receive clearly.
✅ Check your EPIRB or Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) to ensure the battery is current and the registration information is up to date.
✅ Verify your GPS/chartplotter is functioning properly.
✅ Make sure your depth finder/fish finder is operating correctly.
✅ Test your navigation lights and other onboard electronics.
✅ Check your battery charge and inspect all electrical connections.

A few minutes at the dock can save hours of trouble—or even your life—on the water.

⚓ Anchor Smart, Boat Safe! ⚓

Did you know that choosing the right anchor can make all the difference in keeping your boat secure? Not all anchors are designed for the same bottom conditions.

Here’s a quick guide:

⚓ Fluke (Danforth) Anchor
✔ Best for sand and mud
✔ Lightweight with excellent holding power
❌ Not ideal for rocky bottoms

⚓ Plow Anchor
✔ Great all-around anchor
✔ Works well in sand, mud, and grass
✔ Resets easily if the wind or current changes

⚓ Claw (Bruce) Anchor
✔ Excellent for rocky bottoms and mixed conditions
✔ Sets quickly
✔ Popular choice for recreational boaters

⚓ Mushroom Anchor
✔ Best for small boats, kayaks, and permanent moorings
❌ Not recommended for anchoring larger boats overnight

💡 Anchoring Tips
• Use at least a 5:1 scope (5 feet of rode for every 1 foot of water depth). In rough weather, increase to 7:1.
• Lower—don’t throw—your anchor.
• Back down slowly to set the anchor securely.
• Check your position regularly to ensure you’re not dragging.
• Always carry a second anchor when cruising.

A few extra minutes spent anchoring properly can protect your boat, nearby vessels, and everyone on the water.
