There is a moment crossing the Mackinac Bridge when something changes. You feel it before you can name it. 🌉🌲
If you have crossed this bridge more than once in your life heading north, you already know exactly what I mean. It is not the bridge itself, though the bridge is remarkable on its own terms at five miles long above the Straits of Mackinac. It is what the crossing means. Something releases on the way over. The pace of everything you left behind stops following you. By the time you reach the other side and the Upper Peninsula opens up in front of you, you are already somewhere else in a way that has nothing to do with geography.
People who grew up making this drive every summer have a specific version of it. The anticipation that starts building hours before the bridge. The first sight of the towers from a distance on I-75. The way the water looks on both sides when you are on the span itself. The exhale that happens, often without noticing, somewhere between the midpoint and the northern shore. And then the UP, which looks exactly like it always does and somehow always looks like coming home even for people who did not grow up there.
The Mackinac Bridge has been carrying people across the Straits since 1957. It is the only fixed link between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan, which means every single person who has ever driven north has crossed it. Every one of them has their own version of that feeling. What does yours feel like?
