Spring inspection season.

Winter shifts the track more than you think. Things settle and spread, and don’t always look wrong until you inspect closer to realize something is actually off enough to cause trouble.

This is where track gauges become so important.

On track, it’s quick tests with gauges to catch what the eyes miss making sure everything is still where it should be.

Our Green Level Board is a track level and gauge combined. One inspection tool that measures track gage, guard check gage, guard face gage, flangeway, track elevation and inspects switch points as well.

No flash, no fuss. Just the confidence of, “Are we good, or not?”

Spring thaw can quickly become a mud-clogged, water-logged nightmare on track.

Ice melts, rain falls, water builds, and ballast gets bogged down with debris. That’s when instability shows up: hu**ed track, soggy ties, and weakened support that could turn into big problems during a summer heatwave.

Undercutting beneath the track is necessary to restore proper drainage and to remove mud and fouled ballast that has accumulated from the increased moisture.

Here’s a look at the Supertrak SK10RR undercutter in action, doing exactly that. The 10-foot bar is designed for 8 to 15 ton machines, with replaceable teeth, variable controlled reverse for easy chain cleanout, and direct coupler mounting for use with or without a rotator.

Spring track maintenance is about fixing what winter broke, before summer makes it worse.

Taking a closer look at the DPR Kit…

Not every crossing repair needs to turn into an all-day job.

Here’s a condensed look at DPR in action, from mix to pour to set.

From mixing the contents of the bucket to resuming normal traffic, a repair like this can be done in 1 hour.

Everything is in the bucket, it’s cold-applied, and once it’s poured, DPR sets quickly enough that traffic only has to be interrupted for a short window.

And it’s a permanent repair, meaning that it holds up as long as the surrounding concrete or asphalt.

Spring not only reveals the fingerprints winter left on rail, ties, and ballast.
You see them at crossings too. Where asphalt and concrete have expanded, contracted, and taken a beating from salt and freeze-thaw cycles.

Freeze-thaw cycles are particularly destructive to pavement at railroad crossings. Add the constant pounding from vehicle traffic, and already weakened asphalt and concrete start cracking and breaking apart as temperatures swing and moisture moves in.

Come spring, crossing repair is a must.

This week, Tommy Wooten was in New Orleans with New Orleans Public Belt Railroad NOPB demonstrating Railroad DPR, a quick pavement repair solution designed for damaged crossings or any asphalt or concrete surfaces in need of quick, permanent repair.

DPR is cold-applied, takes only minutes to mix and pour, and crews can return the area to service in about an hour. It bonds to both asphalt and concrete, holds up through freeze-thaw cycles, and creates a durable repair that lasts as long as the surrounding surface, all without heavy equipment or long traffic interruptions.

Looks like the demo went well.

And judging by his pics, the New Orleans food scene didn’t disappoint either. Crawfish étouffée. Shrimp po’ boy. Catfish sandwich. Ok!!

Not a bad week in the field for Tommy Wooten.

Yesterday it was 75 and sunny in Chicago. Today, we can see our breath and it’s raining. That’s spring - unstable and unpredictable. And it doesn’t just shift the weather, it shifts the rail.

Spring reveals the damage to rail that winter left behind.

Freeze-thaw cycles are tough on rail. Breaks, pull-aparts, and worn sections often appear more once crews start inspecting everything closely as weather conditions improve.

A lot of those repairs start the same way: cutting rail.

Removing or replacing damaged sections, or preparing rail for welding, all require a quick, precise, and safe cut.

Today on this wet, rainy spring day, our partners from Norton Abrasives came in to perform some cut-off wheel quality control tests out back on our track panel.

Today is a good reminder that along with spring weather, track integrity can change overnight. Real world conditions, right?

While spring brings the joy of warmer weather, it also brings movement.

As the ground thaws, the subgrade beneath the track softens and loses stability. It no longer supports loads the way it did when frozen solid during winter. Ballast settles, and track geometry shifts becoming uneven, especially in high-traffic areas like diamonds.

Track maintenance work shifts to keep up with these spring surprises.

Like undercutting in areas where drainage needs attention.
Or tamping and adding new ballast where support has been lost to restore alignment.

When the track needs to be lifted for ballast tamping, tools like the diamond lifting device provide a controlled, precise, and stable lift. The DLD is self-contained, keeping workers out of the potentially hazardous area, making it safe to tamp a sinking diamond.

Spring isn’t just a change in temperature. It’s a shift in maintenance priorities.

It’s March. This weekend, our clocks spring ahead here in Chicago. Finally, if we squint, we can see the light of spring peeking through!

On track, the season is starting to shift too.

As the ground thaws, track geometry changes, and crews step up inspections to make sure everything stays aligned and safe.

One thing that happens after a long winter is the loosening of locknuts and other components, affecting track integrity.
J.Lanfranco Fastener Systems Inc. THU self-locking locknuts, however, hold tight on the bolt flanks thanks to two locking slots on either side, even through extreme temperatures or winter-to-spring temperature swings.

They’re made from grade 8 alloy steel, which resists corrosion, wear, and galling, making them perfect for heavily trafficked areas.

Lanfranco nuts can also be removed and reused, as shown in the video below, and are available on our website ➡️ https://industryrailway.com/collections/vendors?q=J.Lanfranco%20Fastener

The season is shifting. Maintenance work is evolving. And our warehouse stock is adjusting right along with it.

Some tools live on our shelves all year.
Others earn a seasonal spot.

Like FireSnake. We start stacking them high in the back of the warehouse come late summer/early fall, ready for when the cold hits and the rail shrinks.

This one gets used a lot. It’s more than a maintenance tool, crews rely on it during winter-related emergencies.

We stock based on customer need, not novelty. Only tools that actually solve real problems earn a spot in the warehouse.

One of the tools crews reach for again and again is SpikeFast ES-50, a patented, two-part, non-foam polyurethane resin that quickly repairs wooden ties. It fills holes, frays, and splits, sets up fast, and outperforms alternative methods.

It’s proven, it works, and it’s certainly earned its spot on our shelves.

Yes, we carefully choose every tool that makes it onto our warehouse shelves...

But the final say, the tools that actually stay stocked there? That comes from the crews getting a chance to use them out on track. Their feedback tells us what stays, what needs work before it earns a repeat spot, and inevitably what we can put our reputation behind.
