Every winter, Aspen becomes one of the most important destinations on the action-sports calendar when X Games Aspen brings some of the world’s best skiers and snowboarders to Buttermilk Mountain. For several days, the mountain becomes a stage for athletes pushing the limits of freestyle skiing and snowboarding, while the surrounding area takes on the atmosphere of a major winter festival.

X Games Aspen has become a long-standing part of the Aspen Snowmass winter experience. The event is returning to Buttermilk for its 26th consecutive year in 2027, and Aspen Snowmass and X Games have announced a new agreement keeping the event at Buttermilk through the 2028–2029 winter season.

A ski trip to Vail, Colorado, sounds easy when you’re sitting at home imagining yourself gliding through fresh snow, riding a chairlift above the trees and enjoying the spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains. But once you actually put on your ski boots and spend several hours moving downhill, turning, stopping, absorbing bumps and constantly adjusting your balance, you quickly realize that skiing is much more physically demanding than it looks. You don’t necessarily need to be an elite athlete to enjoy Vail Mountain, but arriving with a reasonable level of strength, endurance, balance and mobility can make a tremendous difference in how you feel during your vacation.

Planning a ski vacation in Colorado involves much more than choosing a resort and buying a lift ticket. One of the decisions that can have the greatest impact on the entire trip is deciding where to fly. Denver International Airport is the obvious choice for many travelers because of its enormous number of domestic and international connections, but it is not necessarily the most convenient airport for every Colorado ski destination. Several major mountain resorts have regional airports nearby, and when flights are available, arriving closer to the mountains can save hours of ground travel and make the first and last days of your vacation considerably easier. Instead of spending several hours driving after a long flight, you may be able to land at a regional airport and be checking into your hotel within a relatively short time.
