A Man & His Dog: Scott & LaLa's Journey

A Man & His Dog: Scott & LaLa's Journey Navy Veteran Scott and his best friend, LaLa, are on a journey across the country with a goal of reaching the west coast by bike.

It's a bucket list item for Scott. He was diagnosed with lung cancer a couple of months ago.

It really has been an adventure with several set-backs and unbelievably generous encounters from strangers these past couple of weeks. I’ll try to catch you all up soon, but JUST NOW Scott & LaLa were reunited with Sam of Sam’s Town!!! I know Scott has been really looking forward to seeing Sam again. Thank you to Charm for helping us reach Sam for this connection to happen!!

Scott & LaLa are well rested. They got up around 5:30 this morning and prepared for their journey. Scott had to leave some of his belongings behind. His trailer was way too heavy causing more strain on his battery and making navigating the hills difficult.

They left Charleston, Missouri and have made it to Sikeston, MO. It’s early so they will probably keep going. Might even make it to Dexter today. 😀

LaLa has much more room in the trailer now. 🐾🐶

Scott & LaLa decided to keep going and arrived in Charleston, Missouri this evening. They are at a truck stop where they can go inside when it starts raining.

Pushed through Calvert City this morning and on to Paducah! They were able to get their traveling in while it was nice and cool. His battery is low, so they will have to charge for about 6 hours. ☔️It looks like rain is moving in and might rain throughout the day tomorrow too. Scott & LaLa may just camp out there until Tuesday morning to wait for clear skies before heading out.

🌳LaLa loves the shade.

LaLa taking a break from the heat in Princeton, KY today. 🐾🐶

Last night Scott & LaLa camped out in a campground in Nortonville. ⛺️ They hit the road this morning passing through Dawson Springs and Princeton before eventually making it to Eddyville. His battery doesn’t last long on the bike, most likely due to the heavy load he’s carrying. He already had to replace both tires in LaLa’s trailer again today. Threads were starting to show and he didn’t want to take a chance. Thank you to everyone who has been so kind to Scott & LaLa. He has met several kind people on this new journey already.

The quality isn’t the best, but I attached a little video he sent today of LaLa barking at a robotic lawn mower. 😂

Scott has decided to continue on down the road for now. They are making their way out of Muhlenberg County, KY today with the goal of possibly living in New Mexico eventually. Scott loves the weather there. While we had hoped to help him even more, he feels the need to keep traveling unfortunately. It’s extremely difficult to change someone’s mindset after 20 plus years of being unhoused.

Wishing Scott & LaLa safety on their journey, as always. LaLa is the sweetest. 🐾🐶It hurts to think of them traveling these dangerous roadways and facing weather conditions without guaranteed protection and resources, but there was no convincing him.

Thank you to every individual who has helped along the way. Your kindness & generosity will always be remembered. 🩵

🚨 TONIGHT is Scott’s LAST night in the tiny cabin at the RV Park. He has came so far in this past month toward a better life with more to come. To continue this transformative path, could you CHIP IN to help him stay another month?

📍Right now, Scott is at McDonald’s trying to raise what he can to pitch in.

💥$675 per month - The FULL amount has been raised!
Y’ALL are INCREDIBLE!!!!

THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts to those who donated! 😀🙌🏽

If you would like to donate, you can either get the money to Scott at McDonald’s, to Angela at the Western KY RV Park, or to Crystal.

NEXT STEPS 🪜- Scott has been out of the workforce for over 20 years. We plan to help arrange soft skills and employment reentry training for him prior to the job hunt. Is there a place that will offer these services in Muhlenberg County soon?

🚩CALL for HELP.
Lifting someone up and helping them get off the street after more than 20 years is not easy—but over the past month, we’ve seen real breakthroughs.

Scott & LaLa’s stay at the RV park ends Sunday, May 17, and right now, we don’t have another place lined up.

Some of you have already started donating to help secure a cabin for another month—thank you. It’s the most affordable option we’ve found at about $22/day ($675/month) plus electric.

To make this happen, we still need $525 more to keep Scott and LaLa housed through June 17.

Scott is getting his ID today, which is a huge step toward finding work. We’re taking this one step at a time—but stable shelter right now is critical.

To everyone who has already given—thank you. Your kindness is making a real difference.
