At the end of January, we shared that Lake Erie ice coverage was nearing 100%, which allowed us a little extra sunshine and helped shut off lake effect snow for the region. That didn't matter as much yesterday, when strong winds brought lake moisture all the way from Lake Huron, which remains more than 40% ice free. Those strong post-frontal winds also helped shove Erie lake ice into the southern shores. This has helped open up waters off the northern shores and compacted ice along the south. If you've ever visited Presque Isle in the winter, you may have seen the massive shore ice piles from compacted ice.

Lake Erie is down to 91.67% ice coverage as of Saturday, and unlikely to reach 100% this season as we slowly warm.
