Did you know, the alarm pheromone the bees sq**rt at intruders smells like bananas? Once they mark you, the whole family comes to kiss you with their butts, in some cases with much fire and passion 😅

This was an epic waste of time...

But thoroughly entertaining!

Any wild guesses as to what they are in? Hint, something that you can find on patio/ balcony. Not super common but this would be the third one we found, but this takes the cake for originality!

Here's the scene, we were called by management saying that there's a swarm on this balcony, Three stories up and you can clearly see flight activity. Neighbors are complaining so we get called out to what I thought was going to be a ball of bees out here, It's wasn't 😂

So I walk out onto this balcony and there's Netflix on the right, couch on the left, And then maybe 2 ft away from all this is this beehive that has clearly been there somewhere between 6 and 9 months! What you are looking at is a pot lid covering a hole, Jerry rigged as an observation portal that they were going to harvest honey out of.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for it, except for liability, this was maybe 5 ft away from the neighboring balcony. I was basically told to get lost so I didn't get to do the removal. So this is the only photo proof I have. Any good guesses yet? :)

Smoker pro tip: clean your smoker!

We throughly torture test our smokers, 12+ hours a day and they only get as many days off as we do! With proper care theyll last a good solid 6-9 months for us, but for thr average beekeeper a good smoker should last a lifetime... except when they decide to fly off roofs, jump out of trees...but we won't talk about that.

Something is amiss...

Second day in a row I didn't need to climb on a ladder 😁
Haven't worked on this many irrigation boxes in years! Usually only during training time so we don't scare the new-bees off too early haha... unfortunately also not joking! Social media really glamorizes the best of the best, what I call vacation projects, but day in and day out are some gnarly don't-tell-OSHA (or my mom) scenarios. Like this last week I was out in the desert saving bees from a roof because everyone kept telling her they couldn't be saved and she didn't believe their lies. She dragged me 3 hours away from home, 107 degrees, in a full bee suit, got mild burns sitting on 140 degree tiles, sweating my you-know-what off...but grandma spoiled me with a grilled cheese sandwich for the way home 🥰

8th project for the day! Yup… this is how you semi-retire from field work 🤣🤣

Beekeeper hack:

This was a fresh colony that had just moved into this irrigation box. We had just finished another removal and had extra capped brood that didn’t make the cut, so this is a great way to entice bees to stick around without caging the queen. Just throw some live capped brood into the box!

My only suggestion: don’t move larvae. Those aren’t what I’d consider “shelf stable” 😅 They’re much more temperature sensitive. Capped brood, on the other hand, works fantastic.

PSA: I’m always a fan of DIY, and we share tips and tricks with clients whenever we can to help chase bees off naturally. A lot of misinformation comes from swarms hanging on trees, branches, cars, etc. People try home remedies, the swarm leaves anyway because it was already temporary, and then they think the remedy worked 🤣

This homeowner actually left plates of sliced oranges and cinnamon next to the irrigation box to try to chase the bees away. Honestly? Probably one of the most fragrant projects we’ve ever done 🍊🐝🤣

To be fair, in high enough concentration inside the irrigation box itself, orange and cinnamon probably could encourage bees to move out. Either way… the whole project smelled amazing.
