🚨 For those who travel with your family to Mexico, a new law is on the way.

Mexico is moving forward with new legislation that will require adults traveling with minors (under 18) to provide documentation proving their relationship to the children when checking into hotels and other tourist accommodations.

The goal is to help prevent child trafficking and exploitation.

Here's where things currently stand:
The legislation was originally introduced in October 2024, approved by Mexico's Chamber of Deputies in April 2025, and on October 7, 2026, was approved by the Senate. It has now been sent to the federal executive for the next steps before becoming law.

So what will change?
Currently, hotels generally require identification when checking in, but there isn't a nationwide requirement for every family to provide documentation proving their relationship to accompanying children.
Under the new legislation, tourism service providers will be required to verify that adults accompanying minors are their parents, legal guardians, or otherwise have the appropriate legal authority. If that relationship or authority cannot be established, service may be refused and authorities notified.
This is a federal change, meaning it will apply across all of Mexico.

When will this take effect?
We don't know yet! The legislation still needs to be officially published in Mexico's federal gazette, and the effective date will depend on the final decree. Some Mexican laws take effect immediately after publication, while others allow additional time for implementation. There is currently no confirmed timeline for this particular change. I will do my best to keep you updated on this.

What should families traveling to Mexico do?
While we're waiting for official clarification, I recommend being proactive and traveling with additional documentation, especially when children are not traveling with both parents.

Birth certificates: Bring a copy of each child's birth certificate listing their parents, in addition to their passport. Parents names may only be listed on long-form copies.

Custody or guardianship documents: If applicable, carry copies of relevant legal documents establishing custody or guardianship.

Parental consent letters: If children are traveling with grandparents, other relatives, family friends, or without one or both parents, consider carrying a notarized consent letter from the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) with authority to authorize the trip. This is particularly important when children are traveling without their legal guardians.

IMPORTANT: These are precautionary recommendations, NOT a confirmed list of documents required under the new law.
We are still waiting for clarification on exactly which documents will be accepted, whether copies will be sufficient, whether notarization or translations will be required, and how hotels will handle different family situations.

It's also important to distinguish these future hotel requirements from existing passport, immigration, and parental consent requirements for international travel.

For now, there's no need to panic or assume that families traveling to Mexico in the coming weeks will face these new requirements. However, this is something travel advisors and families should be aware of as the legislation progresses.

I'll continue following developments and share updates as the official implementation details become available!
