HEADS UP, RIO DELL: Starting Monday morning (6/8), crews plan to begin shifting U.S. 101 northbound traffic over to the southbound Eel River Bridge as part of the Eel River Bridge Seismic Retrofit Project. CHP will be present, so please slow down for the safety of our contractors and crews.

This project has progressed over the years as the northbound bridge in Rio Dell was identified as having seismic vulnerabilities. The project includes seismic retrofit work, replacing portions of the bridge structure, and improving the bridge approach so this key North Coast connection is better prepared for the long haul.

Travelers should expect lane closures and slowdowns in the area while traffic is shifted and crews continue work. Construction is anticipated to continue in phases through 2030, so thanks for slowing down, staying alert, and giving crews room to work safely.

(ROUTE 36/GRIZZLY SLIDE UPDATE) LONGER HOLDS EXPECTED NEXT WEEK: Travelers on Route 36 west of Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park in Humboldt should expect 30-minute delays through the rest of this week as work continues at the slide.

Starting next week, crews are scheduled to use longer traffic holds between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. while material is moved down the slope. During that window, holds may last up to one hour, with traffic released at the top of each hour. Delays are expected to be no more than 15 minutes before 9 a.m. and no more than 30 minutes from 5 to 6 p.m.

Our spider excavators are working on the slope, and the yarder dragline bucket is doing what crews hoped it would do. We are now moving material down the slope. During these operations, rocks and stumps can reach the lane below, so we cannot safely run traffic through the area during active holds.

Now that the setup has been tested, crews are preparing to use a larger bucket to move more material. Another helicopter flight is also planned for next week, with the exact day still to be determined. Those holds are expected to follow the same general pattern.

As always, schedules can shift based on field conditions, equipment needs and weather. For updates, follow us here or check quickmap.dot.ca.gov or the QuickMap app.

DAMNATION CREEK TRAILHEAD CLOSURE: The Damnation Creek Trailhead along U.S. 101, about 7 miles south of Crescent City, and within Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, is closed 24/7 for construction on the Damnation Creek Safety Project.

We know this is a popular redwoods-to-the-coast stop. Our work intends to improve safety on a curvy stretch of highway that has seen a collision rate well above the average for similar facilities. The project includes roadway grade improvements, road widening, curve realignment, new guardrail, drainage improvements, and paving work to help reduce the frequency and severity of collisions in this area.

Construction is getting underway now, with the trailhead closure expected to last about three months. Based on the current schedule, the trailhead is expected to reopen sometime in September, and the overall project is expected to be completed this year.

Caltrans is coordinating with California State Parks and the National Park Service on visitor information. Park visitors interested in coastal trail access can use Wilson Creek Trailhead or Enderts Beach Trailhead from sunrise to sunset.

Please do not park in unsafe areas or enter closed work zones. For current highway information, visit QuickMap at quickmap.dot.ca.gov.

Construction is underway on the Fort Bragg ADA Project, with crews installing new sidewalks along Route 1. In addition to ADA-compliant sidewalks, the scope of work includes retaining walls and storm drain improvements extending from Junction Route 20 to West Elm Street in Fort Bragg.

Minor traffic delays and temporary access restrictions may occur within the project area during construction. Measures will be implemented to minimize disruptions and maintain safe access for vehicles and pedestrians. Please follow signage and thank you for your patience during this project.

Ghilotti Construction is the contractor for the $9.5 million project, with anticipated completion in 2027.

REMINDER: Caltrans District 1 is seeking public input on the Comprehensive Adaptation and Implementation Plan (CAIP) for the U.S. 101 Eureka-Arcata Corridor.

The long-term plan outlines strategies to help protect this vital six-mile stretch of highway from climate-related risks including sea level rise, flooding, coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion.

The CAIP focuses on flexible, phased and nature-based solutions to help keep the corridor safe, connected and resilient for decades to come.
