🚧 REMINDER TO EXPECT WEEKDAY DELAYS FOR ALBION RIVER BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROJECT 🚧

Starting Monday, Oct. 19, travelers on Route 1 at the Albion River Bridge in Mendocino County can expect delays of up to 20 minutes during the following times:
◾ Monday-Thursday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
◾ Friday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Overnight closures are not anticipated but may become necessary. If required, closures will occur between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. Emergency responders will be escorted across the bridge.

Please allow extra travel time and drive with caution in the work area.

The project will replace damaged timber sections along the bottom of the bridge’s northern timber-truss spans and realign timber members using bolted plate connectors at the bases of the timber bridge piers. The work is anticipated to take one month but is subject to change.

Our Clearlake Oaks Maintenance staff recently completed a debris removal project along Route 20 at Grizzly Creek in Lake County. Permitted by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the yearly project clears the creek’s west-side rock weir, which captures sediment. Removing the accumulated material helps prevent downstream blockages and reduces the risk of flood-related highway closures.

COMMENT PERIOD EXTENDED FOR GARCIA BRIDGE SCOUR PROJECT: The comment period for the Garcia Bridge Scour Project has been extended through November 3, 2026.

Caltrans proposes to rehabilitate scour occurring at 3 of 5 bridge piers and the northern abutment at Garcia River Bridge (Bridge No. 10-0113), located at post mile 18.5 on Route 1 in Mendocino County. The purpose of the project is to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge and is needed to address the bridge’s history of scouring and exposed pile cap/footings at various piers. The bridge’s metal components would be spot blasted to remove rust to prepare the metal components for repainting.

Caltrans has prepared an Initial Study (IS) for the Garcia Bridge Scour Project, which is available at https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-1/d1-programs/d1-environmental/d1-environmental-documents/d1-mendocino-county.

The Initial Study is also available upon request by email to [email protected]. In addition, the study is available for review on weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Caltrans District 1 Office at 1656 Union Street, Eureka, CA 95501.

Free Defensible Space Days coming up in November!

A reminder to Southern Humboldt residents that free Defensible Space Days are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, and Sunday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Eel River Conservation Camp near Redway (850 Eel River Camp Road).

Caltrans District 1, CAL FIRE Humboldt-Del Norte Unit and the Southern Humboldt Fire Safe Council are teaming up to offer residents a free place to dispose of woody vegetation cleared from around their homes.

✅ Accepted materials:
▪ Brush
▪ Limbs
▪ Shrubs
▪ Trees
▪ Clean stumps

Staff will be available to help unload. An address is required to participate.
Please securely cover all loads with a tarp or cargo net.

❎ Not accepted: grass, leaves, trash, soil, construction materials or cannabis materials.

NO NIGHTTIME CLOSURES AT EUREKA SLOUGH BRIDGE: Nighttime closures are no longer required on southbound U.S. 101 at the Eureka Slough Bridge.

During Sunday’s closure, crews installed piles along the southbound span as part of ongoing bridge repairs. The highway reopened Sunday evening, a few hours ahead of schedule. No additional full southbound closures are required, eliminating the need for planned closures Monday and Tuesday nights.
