Today we celebrate Indigenous People’s Day to honor the native peoples of the Americas.
At Fortuna Redux, we are committed to using travel to learn about each other, our histories, cultures, values, and shared humanity. We recognize that native peoples are holders of traditional wisdom and stewards of the lands.
We know that each choice we make when travelling has the potential to contribute to exploitation and inequality or, conversely, to support native peoples and their natural environments. Here are some simple but important ways that you can honor and support indigenous peoples in your travels:
* Understand whose lands you are traveling on; before departing, read up on local Indigenous history
* Seek out and support Native enterprises when choosing places to buy food, crafts, excursions, and culture experiences
* Do your research if you are unsure if a tourist experience may be culturally exploitative or cultural appropriation
* Show utmost respect to the natural land; leave no trace
* Travel with an open mind and a willingness to confront and let go of preconceptions
* Be respectful of sacred spaces
* Photograph cautiously and only with consent
