National School Bus Safety Week Edition

This week's Mention Monday goes to Hector, one of Wolfington's newer drivers, for demonstrating that safety always comes first! 🌟👏

When a parent unexpectedly parked in front of his bus in a school loading zone, leaving him unable to move forward, Hector took the right precautions. He coordinated with another driver that had pulled up behind him, made sure he had adequate space, and requested that the driver spot him before carefully backing up. GOAL - Get Out And Look - is one of the safety fundamentals that we stress in our training, and while it takes more time, it almost always prevents an accident.

But he didn't stop there. Hector continued to show great judgment when he recognized a potential safety concern along his route. Rather than continuing to navigate a notoriously narrow, one-lane bridge where traffic can be unpredictable and aggressive, he proactively reached out to ask about a safer alternative. His willingness to speak up and ask questions helped ensure a safer route for not only his route, but others, as well.

👏 Hector's actions are a great reminder that being a safe driver isn't just about following the rules. It's about recognizing potential hazards, communicating, and making thoughtful decisions to protect everyone around you.

🌎🚌 FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🚌🌎

How do kids around the world get to school?

Here in the United States, we're used to seeing those familiar yellow school buses. But did you know that students around the world have some pretty unique ways of getting to class?

🚤 Venice, Italy: With canals instead of roads in many areas, some students take boats to school!

🚠 Colombia: In some rural mountainous communities, students use cable cars to travel across steep terrain.

🛶 Bangladesh: During flood season, floating schools bring classrooms directly to children in communities where roads become impassable.

🚶 Japan: Many elementary school students walk to school in organized groups, helping them learn independence and road safety.

⛴️ Alaska, USA: In some remote communities, students travel by boat or small aircraft when traditional roads aren't an option.

No matter how they get there - by bus, boat, cable car, or on foot - the goal is the same: getting students to school safely and ready to learn! ❤️

🚌🌟 MENTION MONDAY! 🌟🚌

This week's shoutout goes to Dymond, one of our Wolfington school bus drivers, for making safety her top priority 👏💛

On just her second day driving her route independently, Dymond encountered a challenging situation when she came across vehicles parked illegally on both sides of a very narrow street, leaving very little, if any, room for her to pass.

Rather than risk squeezing through and potentially causing damage or an accident, Dymond made the smart decision to stop and contact dispatch for assistance.

With help from our team and local police, one of the vehicles was moved and many were ticketed, allowing Dymond to safely continue her route.

👏 Thank you, Dymond! Your quick thinking, patience, and commitment to safety are exactly why we love our drivers!

At Wolfington, we know that getting students to and from school safely is always more important than getting there a few minutes early.

🚌 FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🚌

💡 Did you know that school buses weren't always yellow?

Before 1939, school buses came in all sorts of colors! Some were red, white, blue, or even green.

That changed when education and transportation experts gathered in New York City to establish national standards for school buses.

One of their biggest decisions? Choosing a distinctive yellow-orange color that would make school buses easier to recognize on the road.

The color became known as National School Bus Glossy Yellow, and it's been an iconic part of student transportation ever since!

💛 Nearly 90 years later, that familiar yellow bus is still one of the most recognizable vehicles on the road!

📣 Mention Monday! 🚌👏

We’re kicking off **Mention Monday**, where we recognize Wolfington team members who deserve a shout-out for a job well done!

This week, we’re giving a big 👏 to Donelle!

Donelle recently found herself in a situation where there simply wasn’t enough room to safely maneuver her bus. Rather than trying to squeeze through and hoping for the best, she stopped, assessed the situation, and called for help.

On one of the first days of school this year, Donelle came upon a woodchipper parked on one of the streets along her route that was partially blocking the road. Instead of hoping for the best and trying to squeeze by, she called into dispatch, where dispatch was able to utilize our camera systems to see what she was dealing with. She was able to get the attention of someone to move it out of the way so that she could safely pass. By using her best judgement, she was able to avoid damage to her bus and someone else's personal property.

That’s exactly the kind of good judgment we want behind the wheel. Even though her run may have been a little bit late, it was completed safely, and safety is ALWAYS first. Donelle has only been driving a school bus for three months. Her attention to detail, keeping her cool under pressure, and patience will serve her well in her career.

🌟 Great job, Donelle! Thanks for putting safety first! We are proud to have you on our team!

🐺🚌 FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Did you know the Wolfington name has been connected to transportation for generations - long before school buses looked anything like the ones we know today?

Wolfington’s roots go all the way back to the 1800s, when the family was in the carriage-building business. As transportation evolved from horse-drawn carriages to motor vehicles, Wolfington evolved right along with it.

From horsepower 🐴 to horsepower 🚍 That’s a LOT of transportation history!

🏁 A SWEEP FOR WBC MOTORSPORTS! 🏁

Did you know that Eagle Wolfington’s sister company, Wolfington Body Company, doesn’t just know buses - apparently, they know how to race them, too! 🚌💨

Over the weekend, WBC Motorsports continued its dominance on the track, with two Wolfington employees taking home the wins in Wolfington #76!

🏆 WBC Technician Corey McGowan took the checkered flag in the Modified Bus Feature, while Parts Specialist Kyla Salka followed it up with a win in the Powder Puff Bus Feature!

Same bus. Two features. Two wins. 🏁🏁

Congratulations to Corey, Kyla, and the entire WBC Motorsports team on another incredible weekend at the track!
