Is your rig ready for fall road conditions? Autumn is the time of year when the weather changes quickly in the Pacific Northwest, making driving conditions challenging at times. Here are some great tips to help keep everyone safe on the roads this season:

🍁 Watch out for deer. Autumn marks the beginning of deer breeding season and they will be more active in areas near the road especially since the recent wildfires have so many displaced.

🍁 Adjust your eyes to darkness. We are now losing minutes of daylight every day, and sometimes the rapid onset of nightfall can take you by surprise.

🍁 Be careful on bridges. As we move toward the winter months, dropping temps can cause slick frost even when it's not freezing.

This summer, Spokane line driver John Koberstine traded his Peninsula uniform for wildland firefighting gear.

After coming out of wildland-fire retirement, John spent six weeks fighting fires across Washington and Oregon.

Peninsula supported him by providing the leave he needed—and stepped up to have his back. Dispatch adjusted, supervisors and drivers took on additional responsibilities, and our operations kept freight moving while John served on the fire line.

He and his crews faced running crown fires, spot fires miles ahead of the main fire, evacuations, and some long, difficult days on the fire line. At times, their job was to make a stand between fast-moving flames and threatened homes—setting pumps, laying hose and positioning crews and equipment wherever they were needed most.

John’s return to the fire line came at a time when firefighting resources across the Pacific Northwest were stretched thin. His experience and expertise were needed, and he answered the call.

“Peninsula’s support made it possible for me to answer the call when our communities needed help,” said John. “I’m grateful they gave me the time to serve—and proud that, together, we were able to make a difference beyond the work we do every day.”

We’re proud of the work John did to help protect communities throughout the region—and grateful to have him back home with the Peninsula team. Thank you, John, for stepping up when your community needed you. 👑
