Copenhagen absolutely surprised Laura.

She spent a few days there before boarding Explora III and came home saying it had quickly become one of her favorite cities.

She stayed at 1 Hotel Copenhagen, right in the center of everything, and fit in smørrebrød, the Designmuseum, a canal cruise, colorful Nyhavn, and plenty of time just wandering.

What she loved most was how easy Copenhagen felt; beautiful, stylish, walkable and welcoming, with some of Amsterdam’s canal-side charm but very much its own personality.

I always recommend arriving a few days before a cruise. You need that cushion in case flights are delayed, and who wants to start a vacation worrying about whether you’ll make the ship?

But the time before and after a cruise is also part of the trip. Don’t just fly in, board the ship, and fly home when it’s over. Some of the best experiences can happen on either side of the cruise.

Copenhagen is a perfect example. Laura came for the cruise, and discovered a city she’d happily return to.

One of my favorite ways to experience a destination is through its food, and I frequently plan food tasting tours for my travelers because they can be such a fun way to get to know a place.

I’ve had pasta in Italy, tapas in Spain, pastries in France, ceviche in Peru and wonderful seafood in Portugal, but some of my favorite food memories are from Japan. I loved the sushi and noodle restaurants. One tiny sushi place had no English at all, so I used a translation app to talk with the sushi chef. At another, little plates of sushi came by on a moving belt and you simply grabbed whatever looked good.

Those are the kinds of experiences I remember just as much as the sightseeing. Some of my best food memories haven’t been at Michelin-starred restaurants. They’ve been in small family-owned places, local markets, wineries in the countryside, and over long lunches that somehow lasted most of the afternoon.

For me, food is absolutely part of the reason I travel, and part of what makes a trip memorable.
