Step inside the creative world of two internationally celebrated sculptors.
On Sunday, September 13, join Historic Albany Foundation for a one-of-a-kind day trip to the Van Alstine–Ramersdorfer Studios and Sculpture Park in Wells, New York.
Guests will enjoy rare access to the private studios of John Van Alstine and Caroline Ramersdorfer, followed by a guided exploration of their remarkable eight-acre sculpture park along the Sacandaga River. It’s an opportunity to experience contemporary sculpture where it is imagined, made, and placed in dialogue with the Adirondack landscape.
The visit has a special connection to HAF’s preservation mission. Van Alstine is known for transforming reclaimed steel, stone, and salvaged industrial materials into striking contemporary sculpture—giving discarded materials an entirely new life and meaning.
The property itself tells a preservation story. Once home to a 19th-century wood products mill, its historic buildings and grounds have been thoughtfully restored and adapted as working studios, galleries, and exhibition spaces. The transformation earned an Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) Preservation Award in 2000.
Today, the creekside grounds feature an ever-changing collection of work by both artists amid forests, gardens, historic structures, and dramatic Adirondack scenery. Van Alstine and Ramersdorfer have exhibited internationally, with work represented in major museum, public, and private collections across the United States, Europe, China, and Japan.
