A few pictures from a late summer float through the White Cliffs section of the Upper Missouri River Breaks.

Canoeing down the river, you can visit 125 year old homesteads, camp where Lewis + Clark camped, clamber through slots canyons, watch eagles hunt, and if you're like my group, moo at more than a few cows! A classic Central Montana adventure!

🛶 Paddle. Protect. Repeat.
We just wrapped up an unforgettable canoe trip down the Upper Missouri River National Monument and it was about so much more than just the stunning views! Partnering with and our group of dedicated volunteers hit the water with a mission.
Between paddling through majestic white cliffs and camping under the stars, our crew rolled up their sleeves for a vital river restoration project. We cleared invasive species, cleaned up campsites, and helped preserve the wild, rugged beauty of this historic waterway for generations to come. These National Monuments protect some of our most cherished landscapes and are worth protecting!
A massive thank you to Missouri River Outfitters for keeping us safe on the water, and to Wild Montana for leading the charge on public lands stewardship. And, of course, the biggest shoutout goes to our incredible volunteers—you are the heartbeat of conservation!

I often tell folks that the best way to see the Upper Missouri River Breaks is through a lens of curiosity.

Why go looking for trails when there’s so much more to explore and discover? Humans are wired to seek a path, a marked route, a defined spot on the map. But we’re also wired to wander, to wonder what’s around the next bend, up the next coulee, over the next ridge of sandstone.

Out here, the river is the only road. Everything else is an invitation. A side canyon that catches the afternoon light. A homestead cabin slowly settling back into the prairie. Ancient layers of stone that tell a story millions of years in the making. None of it comes with a signpost. You just have to be curious enough to go look.

Don’t let a map of the known limit your curiosity. Some of the best places we’ve ever found are unmapped and off the beaten path, discovered only because someone said, “I wonder what’s up there?”

We toss around a lot of language that makes birds sound foolish. Examples are, “eating crow,” “henpecked,” “lame duck,” “for the birds,” “bird brain.” But spend a little time actually watching them, and you start to realize the joke’s on us.

Crows can recognize individual human faces and hold onto that memory for years. New Caledonian crows bend wire into hooks to fish grubs out of tight spaces. Cedar waxwings, like the one pictured here, coordinate their fruit-heavy diets so carefully that flocks will pass a berry beak-to-beak down a line rather than compete for it. Pigeons can distinguish between a Monet and a Picasso. Chickadees cache thousands of seeds across a season and remember the location of nearly all of them months later.

Bird brains are small, but they’re densely packed. Some species cram in more neurons per gram than primates. Next time one of these old sayings slips out, it might be worth remembering, the birds were probably paying closer attention than we were.

We often get asked: “Do you cancel for weather?”

Nope……never have, hope we never have to. However, there are always the unexpected things in this world. If we deem it unsafe that’s a bridge we are willing to cross.

Trips here get booked months in advance, and Montana weather has a mind of its own. But unpredictable doesn’t mean miserable, and it definitely doesn’t mean unsafe. It just means you learn to savor the sunny stretches, and you walk away with a story worth telling.

Honestly? Some of our favorite trips have been the stormy ones. There’s something humbling, almost awe-inspiring about watching Mother Nature show off her full range right in front of you. Wind that rearranges the camp overnight. Rain that turns the Breaks into something moody and cinematic. Skies that go from blue to bruised in twenty minutes flat.

The secret is preparation, not luck: solid rain gear, warm dry tents and sleeping bags, hot meals, a communal shelter to gather under, and a good sense of humor. Once you’ve got those, weather stops being a threat and just becomes part of the adventure.

Out here, the forecast is more of a suggestion. Come ready for anything and you’ll leave with memories no sunny-day trip could give you.

Girl squad! 💛

What a season it’s been. This year we made the intentional choice to scale back our guided trips and focus on quality, consistency, and guide happiness and it paid off. We’ve always had an incredible crew, and through a lot of discussion (and some hard-won lessons), we’ve finally nailed down our magic number for summer.

As we wrap up 2026, we’re planning to keep things intentionally limited again next year too. So if you want a spot, don’t wait! We’re now booking for 2027, and trips will fill up fast.

Dark Butte and the Archangel in the Upper Missouri River Breaks

The name “Archangel” comes from the Greek arch (chief, or high) and angelos (messenger) the high messenger. It’s a fitting name for the way this formation towers above everything around it, catching the last light of the day while the rest of the magnificent sandstone below settles into shadow.

This photo catches it right at alpenglow. the Archangel and Dark Butte lit up gold and rose while the surrounding cliffs disappeared into dusk. There’s something almost ceremonial about watching the light climb these rocks as the sun drops, like the whole canyon is saying goodnight one formation at a time.

Morning stretches with a view.

Before the coffee and before the current picks up we stretch. We breathe. We let the river remind us what matters. Out here, there’s only one clock: river time. Leave the watch behind.

The current doesn’t rush. It doesn’t fight the bends or fret about what’s downstream. The river just moves, patient and sure, always finding the way through.

So we stretch. We slow down. We let the day unfold the way the river does.

Red flag warning! Read below but there are fire restrictions now in place!

Red Flag Warning!!! A red flag warning has been issued for all of Chouteau County and most of central Montana. Extreme hot temps, extremely dry conditions and increasing winds today all contribute to there being extreme danger of wildfires.

What can you do?

Do not burn anything outdoors, not even campfires. All it takes is one small ember and with the conditions outside, that one ember can grow extremely quickly.

Make sure safety chains are well secure and NOT dragging on any towed trailer.

If you need to pull off road, do so in an area where there is no grass or brush. Hot exhaust on your vehicle can start a fire very quickly.

Be aware or your surroundings. If you see smoke or flames, do not attempt to put the fire out yourself. Call 911 immediately and give as much detail as possible about the location. Highway number, mile marker and address if known.
