Three onboard systems can turn into expensive yacht repairs when small failures go unnoticed.

1. Raw-Water Impellers
A worn impeller can break apart and send rubber fragments through the cooling system. A quick replacement can prevent a much bigger repair.

Waiting until a named storm is on the forecast to think about hurricane prep is how owners end up making expensive, reactive decisions under time pressure.

A proper hurricane plan should already exist and it should be specific to your boat, your slip, and your haul-out options. Generic advice doesn't account for the fact that haul-out capacity books out fast in South Florida when a storm is organizing in the Bahamas. Owners without a pre-arranged plan and prepaid spot are often left with whatever's available at the last minute, which isn't always the safest or most practical option.

Teak tells the story of a vessel's maintenance history more honestly than almost any other surface.
Neglected teak goes silver-gray and develops surface cracks that collect grime. Once the fibers open up, moisture penetrates deeper, weakening the wood structure and creating conditions for rot in seams and fastener holes. What starts as a cosmetic issue becomes a structural one if left long enough.

Proper teak restoration starts with a light strip, not aggressive sanding. Over-sanding removes the structural fibers and shortens the wood's usable life significantly. The goal is cleaning the oxidized top layer, applying the right treatment for the wood's condition and exposure, and sealing against future UV damage and water intrusion. The teak on a well-maintained vessel looks warm and rich. It ages with character. The teak on a neglected one looks weathered in the wrong way, and experienced buyers notice it immediately at survey.

Marine AC systems fail in August more than any other month. High ambient temperatures, maximum load, and raw-water cooling lines that haven't been serviced since spring, it's a predictable combination.

The most common cause of mid-season failure isn't the compressor. It's raw-water flow. The sea strainer collects marine growth faster in summer. The impeller on the seawater pump wears and cracks. When raw-water flow drops, head pressure climbs until the system trips on high pressure or the condenser stops rejecting heat efficiently. By the time you notice warm air coming from the vents, the problem has often been building for weeks. Preventive maintenance on a marine AC system should cover: sea strainer cleaning, impeller inspection and replacement (annually at minimum), condensate drain checks, electrical connections at the compressor, and airflow through the evaporator coil.
