This touch-up repair required a bit of flexibility.

And a *very* close-up angle.

Luckily, we’ve yet to come across a spot that’s too tricky for us to reach.

The chips around these drawers were repaired within a few hours:
✓ Surface prep
✓ Sanding
✓ My trusty burn-in knife (still my favorite tool)
✓ More sanding
✓ Faux painting
✓ And matching the sheen

I may have taken a couple of breaks to stretch my legs (and back)… but the result was worth it.

There’s no chance a guest will notice there were ever chips here to begin with, and that’s the whole point.

This is one of the larger exterior tables we’ve installed Paint Protection Film (PPF) and Ceramic Coating on.

High-gloss dining tables are beautiful, and because of that, they’re always in use.

On the interior, they’re exposed to:
✓ Décor
✓ Spills and stains
✓ Guest watches and jewelry
✓ Plates, cutlery, and dinnerware
✓ Game pieces from games night

When a dining table is outside, add in:
✓ Rain
✓ Wind
✓ Salt water
✓ Sun and heat
✓ Sunscreens and tanning oils

Covering this table in PPF and Ceramic Coating was a smart call by the captain and crew. The wood underneath is now protected from dings, nicks, scratches, and stains.

And if minor damage does happen, only the film needs to be replaced, which saves on both costs and headaches down the line.

What do you use to get the color ?

This is a question we have been asked many, many times.

Each repair presents its own unique needs, as touch up artists, we need a variety of color replacement options. Here are a few of what we use...

Blendal Sticks:
↪ Purpose: These semi-hard wax sticks are designed to quickly and easily add or alter color on wood, painted, veneer or laminated surfaces.
↪ Touch-Up Use: Ideal for refining or blending the grain on a touch up repairs after using a pigment power or paint.

Graining Pencils:
↪ Purpose: Precisely apply light color to small areas.
↪ Touch-Up Use: Touching up intricate details, graining and patterns. Can be used to subtly blend colors together.

Blendal Powders:
↪ Purpose: Finely ground, colored substances used to color materials like paints, inks, plastics, and cosmetics.
↪ Touch-Up Use: Can be mixed with various mediums to create custom colors for matching repair surfaces.

Match All Graining Stains:
↪ Purpose: Designed to assist in replicating the appearance of various wood grain color and base color.
↪ Touch-Up Use: Can be used and mixed together to recreate the look of the original wood grain after the blemish has been repaired.

Toners:
↪ Purpose: Transparent stains that add color and depth to wood.
↪ Touch-Up Use: Can be used to match the color of the surrounding wood or added to other color replacements to make unique colors and effects. Adjusts the color tones of the area in a subtle way.

Lacquers:
↪ Purpose: Pigmented (opaque) lacquers provide color and durability to a repair.
↪ Touch-Up Use: Can be used to color match after a blemish has been repaired, can be added to other color replacements to create unique color matching and coverage.

Brush Tip Paint Markers:
↪ Purpose: With a micro brush tip applicator, it provides controlled small and accurate coloring and graining to repair areas.
↪ Touch-Up Use: Can be used to lay down a solid, consistent base color that matches the overall tone of the wood. They come in a range of wood tone colors and cane used to create grain lines.

What color replacements have you seen or used or suggest?

One of the most rewarding and largest PPF installation and Ceramic Coating jobs we’ve done to date was on this stunning Riva yacht for a client.

We applied PPF and Ceramic Coated just about every surface on board, all so that it looks like we were never even there to begin with (which is the whole point).

At the start of this video, you’ll see me templating for the Paint Protection Film (PPF) on a surface in the master head.

We carefully trace the shape and plan the seams so the film doesn’t interfere with the visual lines of the surface. Once the template is ready, we use it to hand-cut the film at the shop, bring it to the vessel, prep the area, spray our slip/sauce solutions, and use our squeegee to adhere to the surface.

Heads are a great place to install PPF and Ceramic Coating on board because products like cleaners, soaps, skincare, and sprays are constantly being used in a tight space.

PPF and Ceramic Coating help protect high-use areas like these from possible stains, environmental contaminants, and scuffs or scratches.

On a Riva, protecting these beautiful high-gloss finishes is quite literally a full-time job for the stews, so it’s great to know we’re giving the crew (and owners) extra peace of mind.Have you ever seen PPF used in a head before?

One thing I didn’t expect when working in yacht interior repairs…How hard it would be to find a mask that actually fits properly.

Many of the masks designed for sanding and repair work seem to be made for larger faces (men's faces?), which can make them uncomfortable to wear for long periods.

After trying quite a few options over the years, we finally found one that fits well and is comfortable enough to wear throughout the day.

But I must say, this little mask situation got me thinking that there is probably quite a big need for protective gear that fits a wider range of face shapes and sizes in the repair world…

Happy World Oceans Day!

If you’re someone who likes to support people doing amazing work for our oceans, Weingarth and I would definitely recommend supporting Schultz and what he’s doing with .

They’re actively cleaning up plastic from the ocean and have collected over 50 million pounds so far!

When I see that, I sometimes think that I’m not making much of a difference, but then I remind myself of something Eric actually talks about a lot:

*No one is perfect, but if everyone reduces just a little bit of their single-use plastic, it will make a difference*.

We try in small ways, like picking up a bit of rubbish when we’re walking along the beach or boating around in the dinghy, using only reusable bags and water bottles, and skipping the straws and Ziplocks.

We’re far from perfect, but we are fully aware of how much plastic we use day-to-day, and we just try to do what we can.

We spend so much time on the water, working on yachts and living on our sailboat (which we converted to electric), so we are very grateful for everything the ocean has given us.

Hatches serve a few purpose on board:
→ escape hatches-having specific hardware to allow access in an emergency
→ access to the bilge-storage of provisions, able to work on vessel systems
→ companionway access-sliding open and close to entry and exit

Because of the varying usages of hatches, they are in use often. This may cause visible wear and tear.

Even the tiniest of blemishes, like this, are very noticeable and should be addressed.

We’ve been working with this particular vessel for a couple of years now, and it’s always a pleasure stepping back on board and seeing the familiar faces.

Knowing that our clients are pleased with our work makes us very happy. We’re truly only satisfied when they are.

Would you have replaced this… or tried to save it?

Over the years, we’ve repaired many miscellaneous items.

Some recent ones are:
→ A cracked ashtray
→ A chipped ceramic vase
→ Decorative crabs we repainted from silver to gold (to match a new interior scheme)

And in this case… a completely broken vase.
Instead of replacing it, the crew asked if we could fix it, so we did.

Caren carefully bonded it back together, rebuilt the chipped pieces, color-matched, blended, and brought it back to its original beauty.

There are lots of reasons a repair makes more sense than a replacement. It could be because of the budget, timing, sentimental value, or simply the hassle of finding an exact match.

So, I’m curious… would you have replaced it, or tried to save it?

We installed Paint Protection Film on this galley countertop.

But before doing that, I needed to speak to the chef.

I wanted to understand how the galley is used day-to-day, because PPF isn’t always the right solution when hot pots and pans are involved.

In this case, he told me he’s very careful. He always uses mats and doesn’t place hot items directly on the surface.

So for him, PPF made complete sense as it gives the surface that extra layer of protection against chips, scratches, and stains from oils and liquids.

And with this surface, once it starts to get marked up, your options are limited. It can only be sanded back a certain number of times before you’re looking at a replacement, and that’s dusty work that can take the galley out of action for a few days.

PPF, on the other hand, can be installed in a matter of hours and is a much cleaner process.…
On another boat, I asked the chef the same question:

“When you take a pan off the stove, do you ever just set it straight on the counter?”
And the answer was yes.

So in that case, I actually recommended not installing PPF because it just wouldn’t have lasted.

PPF is amazing, but it shouldn’t be put on every surface.

It really comes down to how the space is used day-to-day.
