We Were Called To Repair A Bathing Platform. This Was Something Else We Found.

When we inspect hydraulic systems, we don't just focus on the fault we've been called to repair.

We also look for early signs of issues that could lead to future problems.
In this case, the hydraulic power unit (HPU) was showing signs of surface corrosion.

It wasn't causing an immediate failure, but it was exactly the sort of issue that's easy to overlook until it becomes a much bigger problem – leading to unreliable operation, unexpected breakdowns and more expensive repairs over time.

The solution was straightforward.
A thorough clean, followed by the application of a corrosion inhibitor, helps protect exposed components and slow further deterioration.

Small observations today can prevent much bigger repairs tomorrow.

A bathing platform is one of the hardest-working systems on board, yet it's often one of the most overlooked.
It carries tenders, launches water toys, supports guests, and operates in one of the harshest environments on the yacht.

Is Your Passerelle Telling You Something?

Most passerelle failures don't happen without warning.
The signs are often there long before the system stops working.

Here are three things worth watching for:
🔹 Unusual noises
Grinding, clicking, or straining sounds during operation can indicate wear before a component fails.
🔹 Slower or uneven movement
If the passerelle is operating more slowly than normal, hesitates, or doesn't move smoothly, it's worth investigating before it becomes an operational problem.
🔹 Excessive movement or a "spongy" feel
If the passerelle feels less solid underfoot, flexes more than usual, or has developed movement that wasn't there before, it could indicate wear or deterioration that should be inspected.

Most of these symptoms don't mean immediate failure. They do mean it's worth having the system checked before a minor issue becomes a major repair.

Identifying these signs early often means repairs can be planned around the vessel's schedule, rather than being forced by an unexpected failure.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿... 𝗢𝗿 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲?

When a bathing platform stops communicating with the bridge alarm system, it's easy to assume the sensors have failed.

Sometimes they have.
Sometimes they haven't.

On this recent project, the sensors and wiring were heavily covered in barnacles and marine growth. The sensor gaps were no longer within specification, preventing the system from operating correctly.

After removing the marine growth, resetting the sensor gaps, and applying fresh Trilux 33 antifouling protection, the system was back in service without replacing a single sensor.
But when a sensor has genuinely reached the end of its life, replacing it with the correct genuine part is the right solution.

Not Every Paint Problem Requires A Full Repaint

This sliding roof repaint was signed off this morning and is ready to leave the yard.
Like many paint projects, it started with a visible defect.

The question wasn't how much of the yacht could be painted.
The question was what actually needed painting.

After investigating the cause of the failure, the affected area was repaired, refinished, and blended back into the surrounding structure, delivering the result the owner expected without extending the scope unnecessarily.
