National Travel Agents’ Day feels particularly significant for me this year.

I’ve spent a lot of time developing my knowledge, completing specialist training, visiting ships and becoming much clearer about where I want to focus my expertise — particularly cruising and accessible travel.

Because the more I learn about travel, the more I realise how much there is to consider beyond simply choosing a destination and making a booking.

The right cruise ship can completely change someone’s experience. Accessibility can’t be determined by whether a hotel lists an “accessible room”. And sometimes a seemingly small detail can be the difference between a holiday working brilliantly and creating unnecessary stress.

That’s the knowledge I want to keep building, and it’s also what I want to share here.

So whether you already book your travel through an advisor, usually organise everything yourself, or you’re simply here because you love travel, I hope this page becomes somewhere you can learn something useful.

Today is National Wildlife Day, and for some travellers, wildlife isn’t simply something they hope to see on holiday — it’s the reason for choosing the destination.

From expedition cruising in Antarctica and the Galápagos to the biodiversity of Costa Rica or an African safari, the right experience depends on far more than where you want to go.

When you travel, the time of year, what you hope to see, your mobility and activity levels, and the type of experience you want can all influence what’s right for you.

That 6am flight might be £80 cheaper—but what is it really costing you?

If it means leaving home at 2am, travelling on very little sleep and arriving hours before you can check in, you could spend the first day of your holiday waiting around or recovering instead of enjoying it.

Flight times can also affect transfer costs, airport parking, overnight stays and how much usable holiday time you actually have.

The cheapest flight isn’t always the best-value flight.

Who is MSC Virtuosa actually for?

MSC Virtuosa can suit couples, families, multigenerational groups and first-time cruisers, with accommodation ranging from inside and ocean-view cabins to balconies, suites and the exclusive MSC Yacht Club.

However, choosing the right cruise involves far more than selecting a cabin. The ship’s atmosphere, facilities, dining, entertainment and overall layout all influence whether it is right for you.

Another step forward in my cruise expertise — I’m now CLIA Cruise Accredited.

I’ve achieved the first level of accreditation through the Cruise Lines International Association’s Cruise Learning Academy.

But what does that actually mean?

CLIA is the global trade association for the cruise industry, and achieving Cruise Accredited status involves completing specialist cruise training designed to build knowledge across cruise holidays, destinations and the different options available to travellers.

For me, it’s another layer of professional development alongside the individual cruise-line and destination training I continually undertake.

For my clients, it means something much more useful.

When you come to me about a cruise, I don’t simply look for a ship going to the destination you want.

I’m considering which cruise line suits you, which ship, itinerary, cabin category and overall cruise experience are the right fit — because two cruises visiting exactly the same places can give you completely different holidays.

And my learning doesn’t stop here. This is the first level of the CLIA Cruise Learning Academy, so I’ll continue building on it as I develop my cruise specialism.

Organising every part of your holiday yourself doesn’t automatically make it more authentic—or better value.

Sometimes exploring independently is exactly right. At other times, a knowledgeable guide, private experience or organised excursion can save hours of research and help you experience far more.

The real skill is knowing what to pre-book, what deserves expert guidance and when to leave the day completely free.

A touring holiday might look very different from the one you have in your head.

Touring today can mean a luxury small-group journey, an escorted itinerary, rail travel, an adventure through several destinations or a private experience designed around you.

And not every tour has the same pace.

Some people love an itinerary that lets them experience several places in one trip. Others want longer stays, more free time and fewer organised activities.

Neither is better. The important part is choosing the right style of touring for you.

Because a well-planned tour shouldn’t simply take you somewhere you want to go. It should suit how you actually want to travel when you get there.

So perhaps the question isn’t, “Would I like a touring holiday?”

It’s “What kind of touring holiday would I like?”

If touring is something you’ve previously ruled out, tell me what put you off. You might be surprised by how many different options there are now.
