A circus king built a Venetian palace on Sarasota Bay, and its name means simply "House of John." 🏰
John Ringling and his wife Mable fell in love with Venice on their travels, and in the 1920s they brought it home to Florida. The result was Cà d'Zan, finished in 1926: terra cotta walls, glazed tiles, tinted Venetian glass that glows at sunset, and a tower you could see from the water.
Mable was deeply involved in the design, and she wanted the house to feel like the palaces she had admired along the Grand Canal. The sweeping marble terrace steps right down to Sarasota Bay, where the Ringlings could tie up their yacht after a party. 🌅
The story has a bittersweet turn. Mable passed away in 1929, just a few years after the house was finished, and the Depression hit John's fortune hard. When he died in 1936, he left the mansion, his art collection, and the grounds to the people of Florida.
Today it is part of The Ringling in Sarasota, and walking that terrace at golden hour still feels like stepping into a dream from the Florida boom years. ✨
Which do you think is the bigger treasure: the house itself, or the story of the couple who built it?
