American Airlines is now offering four daily flights between Fort Smith and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Ever wonder how airports actually pay for big projects?

It's not magic, and it's not all local tax dollars either.

Most infrastructure improvements at commercial airports like FSM are funded through a combination of federal and state aviation programs. The FAA's Airport Improvement Program is the backbone of that funding, covering eligible projects like runways, taxiways, lighting, and pavement. State aviation funding often helps cover the required match. In some cases additional federal support through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law can also come into play.

What that means for FSM: when you see construction activity on our airfield this summer, it's largely being paid for through programs specifically designed to keep airports like ours safe, reliable, and ready for the future.
