The great migration - there is much more to it than the iconic river crossing! We saw countless (thousands and thousands, as far as you could see!) wildebeests and zebras as they were migrating north. These 2 species migrate together and have a symbiotic relationship. They eat different parts of the grass, so they don’t compete for food. The zebras have excellent eyesight, while the wildebeests have excellent hearing and sense of smell. Between them, they have a better chance of alerting to predators, like lions, cheetahs, and leopards. The zebras really do stand in family groups and rest their heads on each other’s back, facing several directions to watch for predators. And there is safety in numbers!!

Two BIG ones! Water Buffalo and Rhinoceros. We saw these in the Ngorogoro Crater. The rhino was about 600-700 yards away. I zoomed all the way in - 40x- and it is a terrible, grainy picture, but it is the only one I was able to get! I could see it better through the binoculars.

LEOPARD and CHEETAHS!🐆 2 more amazing big cats! We only saw 1 leopard. It was asleep in a tree, completely unbothered by our presence and the presence of several other safari vehicles.

We saw 2 cheetahs. The first had just snagged her dinner. While it was not a “pretty site,” I learned she would have to eat her fill quickly because the vultures would soon start circling. The hyenas watch the vultures and start moving to where they are circling. They will take the kill away from the cheetah for themselves and their pack. Definitely an example of “the circle of life!”

We saw the second cheetah early in the morning near a small lake. She was hunting, but as she moved closer to a pair of lions, they spotted her. They got up from where they were lounging in the sun and moved toward her. She got very nervous. (Lions hate cheetahs and will kill them, not to eat but because they are in competition for food.)The cheetah moved away over a small rise. As soon as she was out of sight, the lions laid back down. We followed the cheetah to the edge of the water. It seemed she might be getting a drink, but no, she walked out into the water and just kept going. She walked/swam across that shallow lake to get away from the lions! Our safari guide said he had NEVER seen anything like that!!

ELEPHANTS! 🐘 From the gigantic to the teeny tiny, they are beautiful, family-centric, and fiercely protective. We saw some baby elephants, and it seemed like they might get trampled - but no, they were carefully protected. One day when we happened upon a family of elephants, we kept on seeing them pretty close together and began counting. There were over 100 elephants in that family group! It was awe inspiring!!
