Chapter 6 — Why We Built the Genesis of Flight Experience

For the past five weeks, we’ve been telling you the story.

The Wright Brothers.
Their experiments.
Their mathematics and engineering.
Their workshop.
Their flying machines.
And the extraordinary journey that began at Kitty Hawk.

But today, we want to tell you why we’re building the Genesis of Flight Experience.

We’re building it for the next generation.

There are young people growing up all around us who have never sat in an airplane, never stood beside an aircraft, never held a set of tools, and perhaps have never had someone help them see how mathematics, science, history and craftsmanship can become something real.

Some children struggle with needs as basic as being able to afford school lunch—much less the cost of a field trip and an educational experience like this.

Yet among those same children may be a future pilot.

A future engineer.

A mechanic. A mathematician. A scientist. A craftsman. An inventor. An entrepreneur.

Or simply a young person who needs someone to help them discover:

“There may be something inside me I haven’t discovered yet.”

That is why we’re building the Genesis of Flight Experience at the Shannon Air Museum.

We want students to walk through the Wright bicycle shop, encounter Wright flying machines and gliders, discover the Wrights’ flight school and aircraft production company, and experience the engines, propellers, tools, mathematics, experimentation and determination behind mankind’s pursuit of flight.

But this is much more than a museum tour.

Students will participate in an educational journey built around history, aviation and STEM—learning and working their way through the Experience with educational materials and activities designed to make them think, calculate, question, discover and create. And when they complete that journey, they will leave with a certificate recognizing what they’ve accomplished.

We want them to understand that Wilbur and Orville weren’t handed the answer.

They questioned. They calculated. They built. They failed. They learned. They tried again.

And ultimately, they changed the world.

What could that story awaken in a 10-year-old?

What could it mean to a teenager who hasn’t yet discovered where they belong?

What happens when a child begins to understand that God has given mankind the ability to study His creation, learn from it, faithfully steward it—and use our God-given creativity to discover, build and accomplish things once thought impossible?

That’s why this is about so much more than airplanes.

It’s about possibility.

Our goal is to make this complete educational experience available to students from second through twelfth grade—including young people who otherwise might never have an opportunity like this—at no cost to them through student sponsorships.

And that distinction is important:

$100 is not the price of a museum ticket.

A $100 sponsorship helps us provide a student with the complete Genesis of Flight educational experience—the immersive journey, STEM programming, educational materials and the resources necessary to provide that opportunity to a young person free of charge.

There are moments in life when we look back at something that has grown, made a difference and touched thousands of lives and think:

“I wish I had been there at the beginning.”

This is the beginning.

The Genesis of Flight Experience hasn’t opened to the public yet. The students haven’t begun coming through these doors. The stories of the young lives that may be changed here haven’t even been written.

You have the opportunity to be part of it from the very beginning.

Not simply to say someday, “I remember when Genesis of Flight opened,” but to say:

“I helped open those doors for the first students who walked through them.”

And on November 14, 2026, we’re opening the doors for a very special evening: the Genesis of Flight Gala.

This will be a fun and wonderful semi-formal cocktail evening and a special sneak peek at the Genesis of Flight Experience before it opens to the public.

But the Gala itself has been built around this same mission.

This isn’t a general-admission event. It’s an evening for those willing to sponsor young people.

A seat at the Gala represents the sponsorship of five students — $500.

A table for eight represents the sponsorship of 35 students — $3,500.

And there are opportunities to sponsor 100, 250 and even more young people.

So when you join us that evening, you’re not simply purchasing a seat at a dinner.

You’re putting students in these seats after we’re gone.

You’re helping open these doors to a child who may never otherwise have had the opportunity to walk through them.

And perhaps years from now, we’ll never know that an engineer, pilot, mechanic, scientist, entrepreneur or inventor first began imagining a different future for themselves right here.

That’s why we built Genesis of Flight.

Not simply to remember what Wilbur and Orville Wright accomplished more than a century ago.

But to ask what the next generation might accomplish if someone gives them the opportunity.

Chapter 5 — Kitty Hawk Was Only the Beginning

December 17, 1903.

Most of us know the photograph.

A fragile-looking flying machine lifts from the sands of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, as Orville Wright pilots and Wilbur runs alongside.

Twelve seconds that changed the world.

But here is the part of the Wright Brothers’ story that is too often overlooked:

Kitty Hawk wasn’t the end of their journey. It was only the beginning.

Wilbur and Orville continued experimenting, engineering, testing and improving their flying machines.

They learned to fly farther, higher and with greater control.

They demonstrated their aircraft before the world.

They built the first airplane purchased by the United States military.

They established the Wright Company and began manufacturing aircraft.

They trained pilots.

And the discoveries they made helped open the door to an entirely new age of human possibility.

Within one lifetime, aviation would progress from a 12-second flight over the sands of North Carolina to aircraft carrying people across oceans and around the world.

That’s one of the stories we’re bringing to life at the Genesis of Flight Experience at the Shannon Air Museum.

Visitors won’t simply arrive at December 17, 1903, and stop.

They’ll follow the journey.

From experimentation and gliding…

to powered flight…

to aircraft manufacturing…

to military aviation…

and into the extraordinary aviation story that followed.

Chapter 4 — The Workshop That Changed the World

The Wright Brothers didn’t stop when they proved mankind could fly.

They had to figure out how to build the future.

After years of experimentation—and the historic first powered flights of 1903—Wilbur and Orville Wright continued refining their flying machines. Eventually, invention became manufacturing.

Aircraft had to be built.

Engines assembled.

Propellers shaped.

Wood carefully selected and formed.

Fabric cut, sewn, stretched and applied.

Every piece had a purpose. Every measurement mattered.

And right now, inside the Genesis of Flight Experience at the Shannon Air Museum, we’re bringing that remarkable part of their story to life.

Visitors won’t simply see Wright flying machines. They’ll step into the world of the people who built them—surrounded by the tools, engines, propellers, materials, craftsmanship and manufacturing story that helped transform an extraordinary invention into an industry that would change the world.

But there is a reason we’re going to such lengths to tell this story.

Imagine a young person standing here for the first time.

One student may become fascinated by an engine.

Another may wonder how a propeller works.

“Maybe I can build something too.”

That’s the heart of the Genesis of Flight Experience.

We want young people to understand that innovation isn’t magic. It comes from curiosity, education, mathematics, craftsmanship, hard work, failure, perseverance—and the willingness to use the God-given creativity within each of us.

And we especially want to reach young people who may never have imagined themselves becoming an engineer, pilot, mechanic, scientist, craftsman, manufacturer or inventor.

That’s why we’re asking our community to help us open these doors.
