What is a Distributor Recurve and Why do I need it

What is a Distributor Recurve and Why do I need it ?

Put Simply recurving a Distributor tailors the advance ( ignition ) curve to a specific engine combination and usage , Please note that from the factory NO Production vehicle has an Optimized Curve , OEM / Manufactures have a general and Safe curve built into the distributor . The Factory specifications you find in any Repair manual will have those , But they are specified for two reasons and two reasons Only ! , First to be safe ( for warranty reasons ) and second, to meet Emission regulations / requirements since the mid 60’s . The Curves the Factory Supplied Will never work as well as a Custom and specific one , so why and how do I make your Distributor Better ? I take into consideration many parameters including but not limited to Engine specifics , Octane of fuel Used , weight and gearing , How The vehicle is mostly used ( racing, towing, parades or just everyday use ) are just a few. A simple analogy of recurving is that I take the distributors High School education , and give it an Advanced Degree in a particular study ( usage ) . Will recurving give me more HP ? yes and no , if you have had your engine on a Dyno and it has been tweaked for best hp, recurving will not give more , BUT ! it will allow you to use it ! If you have heard the term you don’t drive a Dyno , here is what it means !, Most Dynos will start a pull at 3000 rpm’s or higher , BUT most driving is done BELOW 3000 rpm’s , its the idle to cruise RPM range that is Critical for a smooth usable combination , your fuel economy and Drivability is all in that range , Total or peak HP only relies on what the Total advance number in the Ignition is , how it gets there ( the rate ) and what the initial is does NOT matter as long as its all in by the time the pull starts , but initial and rate of curve ( how long it takes to reach max ) is THE key to usability and Manifold Vacuum , Because You DRIVE the Vehicle !, Not a Dyno , its like telling you what the prize is but not saying how to get it or how easy or hard it may be! , I have been recurving distributors since 1976 , I have been offering that service to others since the early 80’s its the Best bang for the Buck you can do to a STOCK or Modified Vehicle with NO negative results , Runs smoother , Idles Better , as it improves Vacuum ( power brake cars ! ) will give you more usable HP, and (if you can keep your foot out of it ) more MPG’s .
