PORT NEWS: Galveston Wharves Adds $28,000 to Maritime Education Endowments

The Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees is continuing its investment in the future of the maritime industry with $28,000 in additional contributions to maritime education endowments at the Texas A&M University Galveston Campus and Galveston College.

The Wharves Board recently contributed $18,000 to its endowment at Texas A&M and $10,000 to its endowment at Galveston College. More than $7.4 million in state and federal grants will help the Galveston Wharves continue to safely and efficiently move cruise passengers and cargo at our growing port.

Over the next two years, the port will install pedestrian safety improvements, a traffic signal at 33rd Street and Harborside Drive, and new wayfinding signage at the port to help keep cruise traffic moving during peak times.

The grants also will fund major studies and design plans to improve access to the port’s cruise and cargo areas, as well as improvements to safely and efficiently connect the port with Historic Downtown Galveston and surrounding areas.

Rodger Rees, Galveston Wharves port director and CEO, said, “This funding represents a major investment in the future of the Port of Galveston and the community we serve. We are grateful to our state and federal elected officials, transportation department staffs, and our dedicated port team for their leadership and collaboration in securing this critical funding. Fitch Upgrades Port Revenue Bond Rating on Cruise Growth, Strong Financial Performance

GALVESTON, TX (Aug. 20, 2026) – Fitch Ratings has raised its rating on outstanding Galveston Wharves revenue bonds to ‘A+’ from ‘A’. Approximately $198.5 million in bonds were issued in 2024 to fund construction of the port’s fourth cruise terminal. The Galveston Wharves operates the Port of Galveston, the fourth busiest cruise port in the U.S.

According to Fitch, “The upgrade reflects the port's sustained growth in cruise activity, which has supported strong financial performance and metrics consistent with an 'A+' rating. Fitch expects significant cruise and cargo capital investments completed or underway to support long-term revenue growth.”

It also confirms the independent rating agency’s strong confidence in the cruise industry.
