Our Mission and Vision Statements are a driving force behind the work we do every day.

They define the purpose of the program and guide the way we utilize opportunities to lead, serve, and provide support to our students and community! Through them, we are reminded daily of what we are building together and why the work matters.

Last week, Beau and Corwin were recognized with a graduation ceremony celebrating the achievement of earning their GEDs through Gilbert Adult Learning Program.

For both of these men, this moment reflects hours of study, consistency, discipline, and the decision to keep pushing forward even when things became difficult. Achievements like this are earned one step at a time, and both Beau and Corwin put in the work to reach this milestone.

Moments like these have an impact far beyond the two of them. Not only does it put them on a better path to chase their own dreams, but in a peer-driven environment, accomplishments inspire others to keep striving for their own growth. It reminds the men around them that real change and growth are possible.

Proud of both of you for continuing to raise the standard and show what hard work can lead to. đź’Ş

Brandon Cline is in his Senior Phase and serves as one of three Student Councilors and a Moving Crew Lead. His time here has been about staying present, being patient, and showing up for the people around him.

As he pushes through this chapter, Brandon is focused on staying grounded and showing up for his brothers. Long term, he plans to pursue firefighting, continue welding certifications, and explore part-time ministry.

One of his biggest challenges? Being away from his wife and kids. However, that time apart has strengthened his commitment to grow into the man they deserve.

He looks forward to the hard work, his time in the gym, and the brotherhood built with the guys.

At the core of it all is his faith and his family. They drive him to keep pushing forward, which is reflected in his advice to others, "If you push through, it will be the best decision you ever make. You will be blessed."

Day in the Life: Team Tractor

One of our Core Values is Accountability, and our Tractor Team puts it into action every single day.

Behind the scenes, these students help keep the property running by watering and dragging the arenas, moving shavings and dirt, and stepping up wherever they’re needed with great attitudes and consistency.

A big part of their role is maintenance and stewardship of the equipment they use every day. Their attention to detail and commitment to doing the job right helps build valuable experience that translates directly into their lives and how they build better habits!

Recently, we had the opportunity to deliver flowers and handwritten cards to local retirement communities in honor of Mother’s Day.

It was a simple gesture, but one rooted in appreciation. Not just for the mothers of our students, but for all the women who have given so much of themselves to help others. We have great women rooting for our students, and we can feel the support!

Opportunities like this reflect what we stand for. Giving back, being present, and learning what it means to be active and contributing members of society. Through acts of service, our students begin to build positive values, strengthen their character, and experience firsthand the impact they can have on others.

So from the men here at the John Volken Academy:
Happy Mother's Day!

At John Volken Academy, our Core Values are more than words. They are the foundation of our culture, our leadership, and the standard we strive to live by every day.

As our program continues to grow, we've refined our Core Values to better reflect who we are and who we are becoming. We believe it’s important to clearly communicate these values with our community, because they shape the way we serve, lead, grow, and support one another!

Another advancement ceremony in the books.

Josh, Braydon, Scott, Corbin, Scott, Roger, Maddox, and Tom all took a step forward in their journeys. Advancement here isn’t handed out; it’s earned through consistency, accountability, and a willingness to keep showing up even on the hard days.

A couple of milestones worth recognizing: Roger recently celebrated 2 years of sobriety, and Corbin G marked 1 year. Moments like that speak to the level of commitment it takes to get here.

As these men continue to grow and reach new levels, more will be asked of them. Advancement brings opportunity, but also responsibility. It’s a chance to step up, take ownership, lead by example, and work harder than ever before.

Each of these men has put in the work to build better habits, face challenges head- on, and grow into stronger versions of themselves. Proud of the work being done. Keep going. đź’Ş

We recently had Code Steel Industrial Inspections spend the afternoon with our guys, and it was a solid hands-on experience. With a lot of interest in welding, some of the more seasoned students got a real look at what’s actually expected when it comes to inspection.

Not only that, but it coincides perfectly with some of our core values. It gave the guys a chance to be teachable, build relationships with others, and learn a new skill that will aid them in a successful, sober life.

Code Steel has invested time and resources into teaching and has even hired a recent graduate of ours! They provide a work environment where our guys put what they’ve learned to use in a safe, growth-oriented environment.

Grateful for their time and for opening up real opportunities for the students.

Leadership here is earned, not given.
Beau, Doug, Wayne, and Corwin have each put in the work to build productive habits, discipline, and consistency that allow them to step into leadership with purpose.

As Student Council, they carry real responsibility. From planning outings and helping keep structure within the house, to guiding newer students through struggles they once faced themselves, their role comes with much more than a title.

In a peer-run environment, leadership means ownership. It means being someone others can trust, having hard conversations, and learning how to understand people on a deeper level. These men are trusted to lead by example, and that trust is something they’ve worked hard to earn every day.

Braydon Hester is in his Senior Phase, and his journey has been about learning how to let people in and build himself up. As he puts it, “The Academy has changed my life in many ways already. The last thing is solidifying my education and setting my sights on a new path.”

He's focusing on receiving welding certifications between semesters while continuing to work towards a bachelor’s degree in software development.

One of his biggest challenges? “My need to isolate.” In the past, Braydon says he preferred being alone and keeping people at a distance. “Now, it’s great to spend time with everyone instead of pushing people away.” Learning to lean into connection.

Braydon values the brotherhood and connections, and says previous graduates inspire him most. “Seeing guys I watched struggle, grow into stories of success, proves that the hard times now are worth it.”

His advice to himself and others? “Don’t focus on the time. Focus on living right each day.”
