A mattress is one of the most awkward things to carry out of a home.

It is heavy, floppy and easy to soil, and a bare one picks up dirt from every surface it touches. Our crews seal each mattress in a mattress bag before it leaves the bedroom, then carry it on its side with one mover at each end. It reaches the truck as clean as it was on the bed.

The kitchen is the slowest room to pack in any home.

It holds the most fragile things in the house, from glasses to small appliances, and it is the room you need until the last day. Our packers wrap each glass and plate in clean paper, stand plates on edge in dish pack cartons and fill every gap so nothing shifts. The kitchen is usually packed last, so you can keep cooking until moving day.

Some moving companies sell the job and pass it to whoever has a truck free. We run our own fleet, so the truck is clean, maintained and stocked with pads, dollies and straps before it leaves the yard. The crew on board works for us, which means trained employees and never day labor.

Every large piece has to clear the door frame, the railing and the top step in one smooth turn. Our crews pad the piece, lay a runner on the steps and agree who leads before anyone lifts. On a curve the piece has to turn while it travels, so the lower mover takes the weight and the upper mover steers. Lifting belts, a padded load and a clear call on every step keep the banister, the walls and the furniture clean.

Some things are too fragile for a moving pad, so Maryland customers get a crate.

A freestanding tub, a marble top or a piece of art can crack under its own weight if it shifts in transit. For those we build a wooden crate around the item, with a padded base, corner guards and a lid fastened down. The piece travels boxed in timber, protected on every side.

Each step is taken one at a time, with the hand truck tilted back and a second crew member below it. The runner protects the steps and gives the crew sure footing. It adds a minute per piece and keeps the load under control the whole way.

Every padded piece on a Maryland truck is labeled before it leaves the room.

Once a mirror is wrapped in a moving pad it looks like every other wrapped piece. Writing what it is on the tape tells the crew to carry it upright, load it on edge and keep everything off its face. It takes two seconds and it protects the glass.
