Happy Caturday from Tanner, one of our cougars! Did you know Tanner and Tommie were both found as orphans in the wild when they were cubs? They are unrelated but are only a few months apart in age. Tanner is mostly blind but appears to see shapes so he can navigate the yard despite that. He also is trained to allow our keepers to give him eye drops daily, as his eyes are easily irritated, especially when it's windy. It's going to be a beautiful weekend to visit the zoo, hope to see you there!

The answer to our what is it Wednesday...if you guessed alligator, you would be correct, photo was of their ear! Alligators have a flap that seals their ears when they are underwater. Their hearing is better on land, but they are able to detect low frequencies that humans can't hear.

What is it Wednesday....do you know what this is and what animal it's found on???

Support our Great Bend Zoological Society by having pizza for dinner! We'll be there from 6-630 with an animal friend or 2!

Don’t want to cook dinner tomorrow night? You should have Gambino’s! A portion of their sales from 4:30PM to 8PM benefit the Great Bend Zoological Society.

We hope to see you there!

Snack time! Did you know the hairless spot on a capybara's nose is actually a scent gland? This is called a morillo and the scent it secretes is used to identify individual capybaras, mark their territory, as well as signal dominance and social standing.

Tongue out Tuesday! Harry the clouded leopard knows how important it is to keep your piggies and face clean! Cats have tiny spikes on their tongues called papillae that have a sandpaper texture. These aid in grooming, as well as stripping meat from the bones of their prey.

Manny the Lar Gibbon says, woohoo! It's finally a little cooler outside! Gibbons call out to communicate with other gibbons, primarily to establish their territory, but also to bond with their partners.

It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of Miss Pearl, our geriatric pot belly pig. While we don't know her exact age, she was in her teenage years and came to the zoo in 2021 after living in a small enclosure on a farm.

After a sudden decline Friday into Saturday, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize Pearl. These are decisions our staff does not take lightly and there are many factors that are included in these decisions. Initial necropsy showed several tumors in various organs. Samples were sent to K-State, but cancer is the likely diagnosis.

Pearl had an attitude all her own and while she didn't love human attention due to her past before coming to the zoo, she would allow her keepers to give her scratchies as long as she had snacks! Pearl's great love in this world was watermelon, it was her absolute favorite, she'd even be willing to take out her keepers just to get it. She was a special girl and will be greatly missed!
