City of Green Bay Government Official Green Bay, WI: news, events, city services, and updates from Titletown USA! Green Bay is a city in and the county seat of Brown County in the U.S.

state of Wisconsin, located at the head of Green Bay, a sub-basin of Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Fox River. It has an elevation of 581 feet (177 m) above sea level and is located 112 miles (180 km) north of Milwaukee. As of the 2000 United States Census, Green Bay had a population of 102,313. Its 2008 estimated census was 101,025. The Town of Green Bay is located several miles northeast of

the city. It is the third-largest city in the state of Wisconsin, after Milwaukee and Madison. It is also the third-largest city on the west shore of Lake Michigan, after Chicago and Milwaukee. Green Bay is the principal city of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area, which covers Brown, Kewaunee, and Oconto Counties and had a combined population of 282,599 at the 2000 census. The 2008 estimated population of the Green Bay metropolitan area is 302,935. Green Bay is an industrial city with several meatpacking and paper plants, and a port on the bay of Green Bay, an arm of Lake Michigan. It is home to the National Railroad Museum; the Neville Public Museum, with exhibitions of art, history, and science; and the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. The Green Bay Packers professional football team was formed in the city in 1919 and joined the National Football League (NFL) in 1921. Green Bay is by far the smallest market with an NFL team, although the Packers are avidly supported in the larger Milwaukee market and throughout Wisconsin and in Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. Green Bay is unofficially nicknamed "Titletown, USA" for the number of NFL titles (13) it has won over the years (including the first two Super Bowls and two further victories in 1997 and 2011). The name appears on the city seal, is used by the Green Bay Chamber of Commerce for its web address, and variations of the word appear in the name of more than two dozen local businesses. Green Bay has been awarded the title of All-America City twice, in 1964, and 1999.

One of the easiest ways Green Bay residents can improve recycling is by keeping plastic bags, wraps, and films out of curbside bins. These items can tangle in sorting equipment at the recycling facility, leading to delays and costly damage. Instead, plastic bags and film should be taken to designated drop-off bins, available at most major grocery stores. Keeping them out of your curbside bin helps ensure the rest of your recyclables are processed properly and efficiently. Small actions like this make a big difference in how much we’re able to recycle as a community.

The Green Bay Common Council met last evening, Tuesday, June 2nd and approved several items, including three of note for residents.

On the infrastructure side, a contract was awarded to Vinton Construction Company for new sidewalks along Finger Road and into the East Town development, including new traffic signals at East Mason Street and East Town Way.

The Council also approved a recommendation from the Traffic, Bicycle, and Pedestrian Commission to remove the traffic signal at Dousman Street and Oneida Street, replacing it with an all-way stop.

Finally, the Council approved moving forward with the Path for Pause project, opening a Request for Qualifications to find an artist to design artistic stepping stones for a meditation labyrinth at Olde North Crossing Park.

The full meeting video, minutes, and agenda packet are available at greenbaywi.gov/Meetings. The next Common Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16.

You've told us loud and clear that Shawano Avenue is a tough drive. Even though this section is a state highway, the City is stepping in to provide relief now while WisDOT prepares a full reconstruction for 2031.

From June 8 to 12, crews will place a new asphalt surface between Oakland Avenue and Hudson Street to smooth out the worst pavement. Traffic will stay open to through traffic only, lane widths will be reduced to 10 feet, and trucks needing more than 10 feet of width should use Military Avenue, W Mason Street, and S Ashland Avenue. Several side streets will be closed at Shawano Avenue, but access to homes and businesses will be maintained.

This work is a bridge to the full WisDOT project that will replace pavement and underground utilities on this corridor in 2031, with city utility upgrades planned for 2030. Thank you for your patience as we respond to your concerns and make your daily drive a little smoother.

Did you know that Green Bay residents can recycle plastic bottles, tubs, and containers of all kinds, without needing to check for a recycling number? That includes household jugs, dairy containers, produce containers, and deli packaging. Add in paper, cardboard, aluminum and steel cans, and glass food and beverage bottles and jars, and you have a pretty wide range of materials that belong in your curbside bin. When more of the right materials go in the right place, our community benefits. For a full list heck out: browncountyrecycling.org/recycling-acceptable-material

June is National Dairy Month and Green Bay is proud to celebrate Wisconsin as America’s Dairyland!

Dairy farming has shaped our state for more than 180 years and remains the largest part of Wisconsin agriculture today. Wisconsin dairy farms produce more than 23 billion pounds of milk each year, and our cheesemakers turn most of that milk into award winning cheese enjoyed across the country. Wisconsin produces about one quarter of the nation’s cheese and offers more varieties and styles than any other state. From family farms to local processors and neighborhood ice cream shops, dairy supports jobs, strengthens rural communities, and brings people together around the table. This June we thank the farmers, cheesemakers, veterinarians, haulers, and local businesses who keep Wisconsin’s dairy tradition strong for Green Bay and beyond.

When recyclables are rinsed clean before they go into your bin, the whole process works better for everyone. Food residue on bottles, jars, and containers can contaminate otherwise good material and send it to the landfill instead. A quick rinse goes a long way. Green Bay is part of a strong regional recycling system, and every clean container you put out helps keep more material out of the trash and in circulation. Thank you for doing your part. ♻️
