5 Tuscan Towns. No Car Needed.

Florence is the perfect base.
And from here, you can reach some of the most beautiful towns in Italy — all by train or bus, all in a single day.

Siena — 1.5 hrs by bus
The one that stops you in your tracks.
Siena's Piazza del Campo is one of the great public squares of the world — a vast, sloping shell of terracotta brick ringed by medieval towers. Arrive in the morning. Sit in the piazza. Order a coffee. Stare at it for a while.
Then climb the Torre del Mangia for views that stretch to the horizon.

Lucca — 1.5 hrs by train
The walled city that actually still has its walls.
Lucca is encircled by intact Renaissance ramparts wide enough to walk and cycle on top of. Rent a bike, ride the walls, dip into the old town below. It feels like stepping into a fairy tale — without the crowds that come with one.

Montecatini Terme & Alto — 45 mins by train
Two towns for the price of one ticket.
Montecatini Terme is a beautiful Art Nouveau spa town at the foot of the hill — grand thermal baths, shaded promenades, and a faded elegance that feels straight out of a Visconti film.
Take the funicular up to Montecatini Alto and you'll find a tiny medieval hilltop village with sweeping views over the Tuscan valley below. Have lunch up here. You've earned it.

Pisa — 1 hr by train
Yes, the tower is real. Yes, it's worth it.
But Pisa is more than its most famous lean. The whole Campo dei Miracoli — the Tower, the Duomo, the Baptistery — is a genuine jaw-drop. Get there early, beat the tour buses, and you'll have it almost to yourself.
Then wander the riverside streets. Pisa is a real university town, and it has real character once you leave the tourist trail.

Arezzo — 1 hr by train
The one most people skip. Don't skip it.

Arezzo has it all — a stunning medieval center, a sprawling antique market on the first weekend of every month, and Piero della Francesca's Legend of the True Cross frescoes inside the Basilica of San Francesco. Art historians come from across the world for those frescoes.

Most visitors from Florence have never heard of them.

Also: Arezzo is where Life is Beautiful was filmed.
