🔧 PLASTIC GEAR L**E FITTINGS… WHY ARE THEY STILL PLASTIC?! 😳

Kevin Ryder from Matthew’s Marine Service is talking about one of those small boat parts that can turn into a BIG headache—plastic gear l**e monitor fittings.

When it’s time to replace one, that plastic fitting can become a mechanic’s nightmare. Kevin explains why he recommends replacing the plastic fitting with a brass fitting and why it may be worth considering before you’re stuck dealing with a broken or stubborn fitting.

But we want to hear from YOU! 👇

🔩 Mechanics: What has your experience been replacing these fittings?

🤔 TO REBUILD… OR NOT TO REBUILD A LOWER UNIT?

That is the question. And the answer isn't always as simple as you might think.

Kevin Ryder from Matthew’s Marine Service opens up the discussion:

⚙️ When does rebuilding a lower unit actually make financial sense?
💰 When is it better to replace it?
🔧 What factors should you consider before spending the money?

Sometimes rebuilding can be a great way to save money. Other times, the cost of rebuilding may make replacement the smarter choice.

But what do YOU think? 👇

If it were your boat and your money, would you:

A️⃣ Rebuild the lower unit
B️⃣ Replace the lower unit
C️⃣ Depends on the damage

👇 Drop your answer in the comments and tell us WHY!

Let's see what boat owners and marine professionals think.

🚨 BOAT OWNERS: DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOUR TRAILER!

You take your boat in for regular maintenance… but when was the last time you had the trailer properly serviced? 👀

Kevin Ryder from Matthew’s Marine Service breaks down what’s actually involved in trailer maintenance and why this often-overlooked service can save you hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars down the road.

Trailer maintenance can include things like:
🔧 Checking and servicing wheel bearings
🛞 Inspecting tires and wheels
🛑 Checking brakes, calipers & rotors
⚙️ Inspecting hubs and suspension components
💧 Checking for corrosion and water intrusion
🔩 Inspecting critical hardware and components

The goal isn't just to fix problems when they happen—it's to catch small problems before they become expensive repairs.

💰 Preventative maintenance costs a lot less than replacing damaged components.

🚨 THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH CHEAPER SERVICE CALL…

Trailer maintenance is one of the most overlooked parts of boat ownership—and ignoring it can turn a simple maintenance item into a VERY expensive repair.

Kevin Ryder from Matthew’s Marine Service takes a look at a customer’s trailer where neglected maintenance resulted in a ruined brake system, including damaged calipers and rotors. 😬💰

The frustrating part? Regular trailer service could have helped prevent the problem in the first place.

Your boat can have a perfectly maintained engine, but if your trailer isn't maintained, you're still risking:
⚠️ Brake failure
⚠️ Expensive repairs
⚠️ Being stranded on the side of the road
⚠️ Damage to your boat—or worse

👉 Don't just maintain your boat. Maintain what gets your boat to the water.

Follow Matthew’s Marine Service for more real-world boating tips, maintenance advice, troubleshooting, and money-saving information from marine professionals.

📍 Proudly serving boat owners throughout Upstate South Carolina, including Greenville, Anderson, Oconee & Pickens.
