The pace on Tenerife is not the pace of Madrid, and the first time you notice it is usually in a restaurant.

In Puerto de la Cruz, we ordered dinner and then just sat there, waiting for the check, until we realized nobody was going to rush us. Island time means dinner takes two hours because the whole point is that you are not going anywhere.

Mainland Spain has its own rhythm too, late lunches, later dinners, a whole city that seems to pause mid-afternoon, but it still moves with city energy between those pauses.

Tenerife slows all the way down, coastline and volcanic black sand and bougainvillea everywhere you look. Two very different trips wearing the same passport stamp.

I turned 50 on black volcanic sand.

We based ourselves in Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, then flew to mainland Spain for a completely different pace: Toledo's centuries-old sword makers, Segovia's 2,000-year-old aqueduct, a Flamenco show in Madrid, and a few days wandering the city.

Turned 50 on black volcanic sand in Puerto de la Cruz and I still think about the logistics that made it work.

We based ourselves at the Alua Tenerife, in town, walking distance to Playa Jardín, which matters more than it sounds because Tenerife's coastline isn't the flat white-sand-and-lounge-chairs setup you're picturing. It's dark volcanic sand, real surf, and a town that wraps right around it.

Two things I'd tell anyone researching this island before booking: pick your base by walkability, not just beach proximity, and check which beaches actually have lifeguard flags, because the surf here has real pull.

How many days do you actually need for Spain and Tenerife in one trip?

Here is the honest answer. Mainland Spain, think Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, wants at least five to seven days to feel unrushed.

Tenerife is its own world entirely, and most groups need three full days just to settle into the slower rhythm before they even feel like they are on vacation.

Combine both and you are looking at ten to twelve days minimum if you want the trip to feel like a story instead of a sprint. We have seen groups try to squeeze it into a week and come home saying they never quite caught their breath.

What is the longest you all have ever debated over group chat about how many days is "enough" for a big trip? Tell us, we have heard some good ones.

Have you heard of Icy Strait Point?

Most first-time Alaska cruisers haven't. It's not Juneau or Ketchikan. It's not a classic gold rush town. But it might be the port that surprises you most.

Icy Strait Point is owned and operated by the Huna Totem Corporation, and it feels authentically Tlingit in a way that's rare. The cultural center isn't performative - it's real, and it's moving.

The wildlife viewing here is some of the best on any Alaska cruise. Because the area is less developed and the port is smaller, bear sightings during salmon season are more common than in busier spots. Whale watching odds are excellent too.

And if someone in your group wants a thrill, the ZipRider is the longest zipline in North America. Not my speed, but people who do it rave about it for years.

This port doesn't get the attention Juneau gets, but it delivers something you can't replicate elsewhere - a quieter, more grounded Alaska experience.
