The frozen margarita was invented in 1971 by Mariano Martinez at his East Dallas restaurant. Mariano tinkering with an old soft serve ice cream machine led to the world-changing invention! Go try an original frozen margarita at one of his five DFW area restaurants!

Hotel Magdalena sits on one of the most historic stretches of South Congress. Long before it became the boutique hotel we know today, this land was home to the Terrace Motor Hotel, the Austin Opry House, and even part of Willie Nelson’s world in the 1970s.

From live music and roadside motel culture to hidden nods throughout the property today, the history of old Austin is still woven into every corner here.

Even the rooms tell stories, each featuring photography by legendary Texas photographer Scott Newton, who documented many of the artists and moments that shaped Austin’s music scene.

Hotel Magdalena is a place that feels deeply connected to the Austin that came before it.

Texas cowboys captured by Erwin E. Smith. The famed photographer and Texas native, Smith, beautifully captured the life and work of cowboys in Texas as well as Arizona/New Mexico. Love these!

Images from the Amon Carter Museum, which has an extensive collection of Smith’s work that can be viewed digitally.

El Camino Real, Texas’ royal road with centuries of history. The King’s Highway was formalized in the 1690s by the Spanish and stands an important thoroughfare for commerce, travel, and expansion in Texas history. I always loved seeing signs marking El Camino Real growing up in San Antonio.
