Perhaps you haven’t heard of Bob McDill, but you have heard his songs! McDill has an incredible 31 no. 1 country hits. The retired songwriter, from the Beaumont area, treated his songwriting like a true 9-to-5 job with a great work ethic resulting in iconic songs like ‘Song of the South’, ‘Louisiana Saturday Night’ and ‘Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On’.

His songwriting often paints a portrait of southern culture with literary depth, influenced by his voracious reading. McDill retired in 2000 and hasn’t written a song since, instead turning his attention to writing two books. He is a country music and Texas legend!

Dating back to 1932, the San Angelo Fat Stock Show and Rodeo has a storied history in Texas. The rodeo was added in 1934 to the Stock Show. These images were taken in 1940 by famed photographer Russell Lee on assignment for the Farm Security Administration to capture American life during the New Deal Era. Fantastic images!
