The bad news? 🌧️
You checked the weather forecast for your upcoming Mexico vacation...and somehow there’s a rain cloud showing up EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. 😭
The good news? ☀️
Don’t panic yet.
Weather in the Mexican Caribbean can be incredibly localized, and those tropical showers are often quick. Seeing rain in the forecast definitely doesn’t mean you’re going to spend your entire vacation watching it pour.
You might get a downpour, go eat another ice cream cone, and be back in the pool an hour later. Cheers! 🍹
The even better news? 🎉
If you do end up with a rainy day, you’re actually in a pretty great place for it. Mexico has plenty of amazing things to do when the sunshine decides to take the day off.
Here are my 10 things to do on a rainy day in the Mexican Caribbean:
1. Explore an underground cenote 💦
Rain? What rain? Head underground instead! Check out Aktun Chen, Río Secreto, Dos Ojos or Mayamar for incredible caves and cenotes where sunshine definitely isn’t required.
2. Get muddy at an adventure park 🌿
Don’t automatically cancel your adventure day just because it’s raining. Many activities still operate, and honestly, ATVs and ziplines can be even more fun when you’re already getting wet. Just check conditions before you go, since activities may pause for lightning or severe weather.
3. Take a Mexican cooking class 🌮
Turn a rainy afternoon into tacos! You’ll find fun cooking classes throughout Cancún, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
4. Check out SFER IK 🎨
Part art gallery and part architectural experience, SFER IK is one of the most unique places to explore near Tulum. There are two locations: Tulum beach road and Francisco Uh May.
5. Visit Museo Maya de Cancún 🗿
Located right in Cancún’s Hotel Zone, this museum has an impressive collection of Maya artifacts along with exhibits exploring the history and archaeology of the region.
6. Get ridiculous at the 3D Museum 📸
Playa del Carmen’s 3D Museum of Wonders is completely indoors and filled with interactive optical-illusion artwork. It’s also perfect for some hilariously fun vacation photos.
7. Have a spa day 🧖♀️
Rainy weather is the perfect excuse for a little pampering. Visit your resort spa, or head into Playa del Carmen, where you’ll find plenty of spas and massage spots — often at much lower prices.
8. Go shopping 🛍️
Try Marina Puerto Cancún, La Isla, Quinta Alegría, or GO Grand Outlet Riviera Maya. Many shopping areas have covered sections, so you can browse between the raindrops.
9. Have a vacation photoshoot 📸
Rain doesn’t mean your vacation photos have to be cancelled. Resorts have beautiful lobbies, covered walkways, restaurants and tropical covered spaces that make gorgeous backdrops. Grab a friend and DIY it, or book a professional photographer.
10. Go to the movies 🍿
And when all else fails...there’s always popcorn! Cancún and Playa del Carmen both have modern cinemas showing movies in Spanish and English. Just double-check whether your showing is dubbed or subtitled before buying your tickets.
