ETIAS Update: Europe’s New Travel Requirement Is Still on Hold

If you’ve heard that travelers will soon need a new authorization to visit Europe, you’re not alone—and there’s been plenty of confusion about exactly when that will happen.

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new electronic travel authorization planned for visitors from visa-exempt countries, including the United States and Canada, traveling to participating European countries for short stays. Think of it as somewhat similar to the U.S. ESTA system.

The latest news? There is still no confirmed launch date. The European Union has removed its previously stated 2026 target, and ETIAS is not currently operational or accepting applications. The system is expected to follow the rollout of Europe’s new Entry/Exit System (EES), which is being introduced separately at European borders.

For travelers, the most important thing to know right now is simple: there is nothing you need to apply for yet. When ETIAS does launch, the EU says travelers will be able to apply online before their trip, and the authorization will be required for eligible visa-exempt visitors. (And don't worry...we will let you know when this happens.)

So if Europe is on your travel calendar, keep planning—but don't let the ETIAS headlines send you scrambling for an application that doesn't exist yet. The European Union will announce the official start date and application details once the system is ready.
