We're looking for a few of them — night shift commodity drivers out of Nyssa and Hermiston, running 6 PM to 6 AM. Quiet roads, no traffic, nobody looking over your shoulder. Some people would call that unsettling. We call it the best part of the job.

There's a difference between watching someone work on a truck and actually being the one with your hands in it.

That's the idea behind our internship. You're not standing off to the side taking notes — you're in the shop when something needs fixing, in the office when the schedule needs sorting out, on the yard when a truck's getting fueled and loaded for the day. It's the kind of experience that doesn't come from a classroom, because none of it happens in one.

We built this program because the best way to understand the work is to actually do it — alongside people who've been doing it a long time and don't mind showing you how.

Saturday, one of our trucks and drivers hauled out to the Sage Center — trailer loaded, shavings down, ready to turn into a petting zoo for the 13th Annual Harvest Festival's Kids Corner. Third year running we've done this.

This year's lineup: two goats, a bunny, a chicken, and a duck, all patient enough to handle a line of kids waiting their turn.

The best part might be the kids who've been coming back for a few years now — a couple of them asked where the pony went, or the llama from last fall. Apparently we've built something of a tradition without really meaning to.

It's not a pumpkin patch. But it's about as close as we get to one. Thanks to the Sage Center for having us back, to everyone who came out, and to Justin, our driver, who spent his Saturday hauling a trailer, setting it up, and handling a parade of very small hands.

Out on the road, these drivers make it look easy — tight curves, narrow lanes, backing into spots that shouldn't be possible. So we figured, let's shrink the space even more, hand them a truck that's not their usual rig, and see what happens.

Turns out that's exactly the kind of pressure that makes things interesting. Some drivers threaded it clean, cool as ever. Others found out real quick that a different truck in a tighter space changes everything, cones included. We saw wide, careful passes. One near miss that had everyone holding their breath. A tap that didn't quite take a cone down. And one that didn't make it out alive.

Add an audience watching every move, a little trash talk, a few close calls, and that's the Truck Rodeo — proof that these drivers are as good as they are for a reason, even when we make it a little harder than usual.
