Accepting Applications for Artist in Residence. This position is for an Artist who is working in fiber related arts. As the Artist in Residence you will have time, opportunity, and a friendly and positive work environment to explore your work.
What: A 2-6 week Artist in Residency at Green Sheep Studios in Hickory NC.
Why: Having benefited from being the 2011 Artist in Residence At Crossnore Weaving, Room, it is my goal to give back to the Community and to other emerging Artist. Hickory was a textile town for many years, from hosiery, to clothing, to furniture, to fabric and so forth and so on. Most families who have ties to the community have history in the textile industry. In the late 70's those jobs began to move over seas and by the early 90's most textile related industries were merely a memory, leaving a lot of empty buildings!
Hickory has a growing arts community and it's my goal to support that community, either formally or informally.
Where: Green Sheep Studios is located in a lovely historic brick building at #7, 14th St SW. Light pours in from massive windows and the hardwood floors provide a lovely golden ambiance.
The Nitty Gritty: Like most AIR Programs, we provide an appropriate work space and an environment to encourage creativity and expression. This is a non-compensated position. Depending upon the artist's goals and projected plans we are open to designating a 2-6 week residency. It will be up to the artist to secure their own Room and board. Hickory is a college town and there are often opportunities for roommates.
What we hope to receive in return: 1) We ask each artist to donate one item that they created while serving as AIR. This item becomes the property of GSS and may become part of archives, shown in Gallery, may be used in advertising opportunities, may be auctioned off or may be donated to other locals arts programs.
2) We hope to generate an interest in AIR at GSS and so hope that we can work with artist who want to have that time and creative space to do what they have a passion for, while inspiring other artist to seek out AIR opportunities at GSS.
3) Inspiration and energy in both the studio and surrounding community!
4) We would like for our AIR to reach out to local schools, both public and private and to help develop a program with GSS to share
opportunities with teachers and students in the area, such as demonstrations, a student art exhibition at GSS.
as this is a new program we will be working together to develop this program to make it better each year!
What our AIR can expect and anticipate:
1) To work in an environment of respect, encouragement, and diversity. This means that each person is respected for what they bring to the "table", the drawing board, the studio. Encouragement, to explore one's artistic experience, revelation, and artistic inner muse. Diversity, exactly what it means...
2) To work in a shared space that is designed for artistic expression.
3) To receive positive critique and feedback.
4) When appropriate, GSS will host a Gallery show, with reception near the completion of the AIR's residency.
