Melissa Dos Santos I had some black thread donated by a company. I want to weave some scarves to send to our military guys in Afghanistan. I know you have connections. Can you advise if this is something that would be needed/wanted? I can add olive green..brown...whatever. I don't know how many I can get done by Christmas, but I am going to start this as a weave it forward project...so hopefully it will grow over the next few years.

I'm assuming there are cold winter needs and hot summer?

If you could advise me on width and length preference?

I am doing this publicly, because I really hope to get volunteers to come in and work on this project. Anyone who reads this an is interested please contact me. No experience necessary.

Melissa, if you want to reply private that's fine. If you can't advise then I understand also.
If anyone else wants to join the conversation, positive comments only, please.

I am thinking about something like this in black and olive green or black and brown.

The leaves are changing and there's a chill in the air. What better way to spend the weekend than weaving a nice cozy scarf, either for yourself or a holiday gift!

No better way...unless that is.. to do it while sipping Apple spice Sangria and nibbling on warm olives and yummy cheese!

Oh...at a great discounted price of $245.00

includes approximately 16 hours loom rental, aupplies, instructions, and refreshments. Laughter is free!

Come as you are. Be here by 8. Coffee will be hot and pastries fresh and yummy!

We keep our workshops small so each student gets individual attention. There are 5 spaces only for this workshop.

Accepting Applications for Artist in Residence. This position is for an Artist who is working in fiber related arts. The artist will have use of a fiber arts studio equipped with floor and tapestry looms, sewing machines, screen printing equipment for small projects. As the Artist in Residence you will have time, opportunity, and a friendly and positive work environment to explore your work.

What: A 2-6 week Artist in Residency at Green Sheep Studios in Hickory NC.

Why: Having benefited from being the 2011 Artist in Residence At Crossnore Weaving, Room, it is my goal to give back to the Community and to other emerging Artist. Hickory was a textile town for many years, from hosiery, to clothing, to furniture, to fabric and so forth and so on. Most families who have ties to the community have history in the textile industry. In the late 70's those jobs began to move over seas and by the early 90's most textile related industries were merely a memory, leaving a lot of empty buildings!

Hickory has a growing arts community and it's my goal to support that community, either formally or informally.

Where: Green Sheep Studios is located in a lovely historic brick building at #7, 14th St SW. Light pours in from massive windows and the hardwood floors provide a lovely golden ambiance.

The Nitty Gritty: Like most AIR Programs, we provide an appropriate work space and an environment to encourage creativity and expression. This is a non-compensated position. Depending upon the artist's goals and projected plans we are open to designating a 2-6 week residency. It will be up to the artist to secure their own Room and board. Hickory is a college town and there are often opportunities for roommates.

What we hope to receive in return: 1) We ask each artist to donate one item that they created while serving as AIR. This item becomes the property of GSS and may become part of archives, shown in Gallery, may be used in advertising opportunities, may be auctioned off or may be donated to other locals arts programs.

2) We hope to generate an interest in AIR at GSS and so hope that we can work with artist who want to have that time and creative space to do what they have a passion for, while inspiring other artist to seek out AIR opportunities at GSS.

3) Inspiration and energy in both the studio and surrounding community!

4) We would like for our AIR to reach out to local schools, both public and private and to help develop a program with GSS to share
opportunities with teachers and students in the area, such as demonstrations, a student art exhibition at GSS.

as this is a new program we will be working together to develop this program to make it better each year!

What our AIR can expect and anticipate:

1) To work in an environment of respect, encouragement, and diversity. This means that each person is respected for what they bring to the "table", the drawing board, the studio. Encouragement, to explore one's artistic experience, revelation, and artistic inner muse. Diversity, exactly what it means...

2) To work in a shared space that is designed for artistic expression.

3) To receive positive critique and feedback.

4) When appropriate, GSS will host a Gallery show, with reception near the completion of the AIR's residency.

Registration now open...September 3-4

$225.00

Each participant will be instructed in the art of "Book Folding" to create a one-of-a-kind work of art. Once you have created your first book art, then you can fill your hard-to-gift list with wonderful works of art.

The Book art in the photo below is a book I am currently working on. It is a text book that I recovered from a stack of books someone was going to discard into the garbage. When it is finished it will have a new cover, with braided trims, tassels, and brass hinges. The 3 dimensional heart that looks like a tunnel to infinity with be embossed with gold, and a gold chain will keep the book opened just the right amount.

Book folding can produce words, such as love, baby, peace...or names... students will be given the tools to be able to calculate any design they want to fold.

Each student kit will contain a simple book folding design, a straight edge, a variety of "architectural findings", paints, finishes, etc.

This 2 day workshop will be 285.00 in the future, but as an early Christmas "gift" to our students we are introducing this 2 day workshop, with kit included for 225.00. These books sale for anywhere from $90.00-$300.00 and up depending on the amount of detail and the final finishes.

Call 828-217-6013

This workshop is limited to approximately 6 participants.

Check back later to see the finished results!

I'm giving all of our Facebook and Instagram Friends the heads-up before I put this on the GSS website. Our Baby Wrap/Carrier/sling/Mobi Weaving class starts July 7th and is from 8:00 am-7:00 pm daily through July 10th. I have 5 loom spaces open and it is a first come first serve basis.

This is a beginning/intermediate weaving class.

NO Weaving EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.

Registration and a deposit of $150.00 is due by July 1. Students will choose from 4 different warp combinations. 1. Stone Haven: dark gray and off white; 2. Princess in Pink: A rich pink concoction, fit for any Princess 3. The Blue Knight: a combo of light and dark blue. 4. The Snow Queen: A white warp and you can choose your own weft color or weave white on white.

Due to the extended class period, the very long warp, and because this is a "sit and weave" which means we do the hard work of winding the warp and dressing or setting up the loom and all you do is the fun part of sitting and weaving. This price includes weaving instruction and tuition, warp and weft (approximately a $50.00-75.00 value) tools and supplies rentals, and finishing all for only $395.00. That's less than $100.00 a day and includes loom rental. Loom rental is often as much as $150.00 a day in many studios!

This is the PERFECT GIFT for a Mom or Dad-To-Be. Come and weave a Mobi for the new Mom and/or Dad to be. Or. Mom and Dad come and weave together, one for each of you!!! What a great heirloom to pass down from generation to generation. And, if you register by July 1st we will work with you to select your weft and for an up charge you can choose silk or superwash supersoft lightweight Merino wool, which gives a beautiful hand or "feel".

The photos below are not necessarily the warps you will be weaving on.

On the Loom, 6 shaft, 8 treadle tied up, plain weave and a reverse twill pattern that I have named "Pieces of 8". If you look at the pattern with the blue weft you would be able to see between 8-20 different designs, from flowers to rectangles to blue "x's" to white "x's", and skull and cross bones, diamonds, ... it's a challenge to count each interlocking design. It is exquisite in the white silk weft and while the intricate design is lost in the heavier dark gray wool boucle, it makes such a powerful design...
