Here is a look at forecast onset time of steadier snow this afternoon, as well as a look at duration and type of precipitation. There will be variance in the intensity and duration from along and north of I-80 versus south of I-80. Overall though, 2 to 4 inches are expected area-wide, with isolated higher amounts possible near Lake Michigan where lake effect snow showers may continue into Friday.

We're now in the peak of the storm with blowing and accumulating snow. Visibility is below Ѕ of a mile where the snow is steadiest! Numerous car wrecks have been reported on area interstates (especially I-65). The heaviest snow rates should begin to taper toward 5 or 6 PM from west to east.

Patchy blowing snow is possible this evening and again tomorrow afternoon and evening. Light snow moves across the area early this evening with gusty NW winds to 20 mph behind the cold front. Saturday afternoon gusty S winds to 25 mph develop which could result in patchy blowing snow across east-west roadways in rural and open areas. Check road conditions before driving and take it slow and increase following distance!

Here is an updated look at additional forecast snow amounts overnight through Thursday afternoon. Lake effect snow will develop into northeast Illinois overnight and persist into Thursday. Meanwhile, blowing and drifting snow remains a problem based on reports from law enforcement due to gusty north winds, especially across east-west roads in exposed areas. There will be additional light snow as part of the winter storm system south of I-80, especially south of the Kankakee River Valley, late tonight into Thursday morning. Be sure to check road conditions before traveling and take it slow when driving in snow!
